Editorial Reviews

ATO records is proud to announce the release of Women & Work, the new studio album from Memphis rockers Lucero. Recorded at the historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, Women & Work was produced and mixed by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly) and shows an impressive step forward in both songwriting and development of the band s signature Memphis rock and soul sound. Frontman ben Nichols says, This record is Lucero doing what we do best. It s one part barrelhouse Rock & Roll and one part lonesome nights. The thing is, we are having more fun than ever playing both on stage and off and I think that shows on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucero - Women & Work March 17, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lucero's latest release, Women & Work, picks up where there last release - 1372 Overton Park - left off. The horns and piano continue to give Lucero a dimension that their earlier releases didn't have. The songs are strong, fun, southern and I can't wait to see them performed live (come to Charlotte NC again soon, guys).

As you expect from Lucero, the ghosts of the woman/women that have brushed off Ben Nichols in the past and those he had to work really hard to coax are well represented (Juniper, come here). Sorry you had to go through that Ben; but, man, it makes for some great songs. There are also a couple of songs with more reflective themes ("Sometimes", "When I Was Young").

One other thing ... I noticed a little less gravel in Ben's vocals in several spots - to me, growth in his approach. Don't mistake, there is still plenty here and I always love it. Just less than usual.

This is a great album by one of my favorite bands. I'll probably spend several nights this Summer in my yard with a cold drink just listening. Great stuff. Thanks guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Album not my favorite March 14, 2012
By NathanC
Format:Audio CD
I've been a fan of Lucero for a few years now, by fan I mean I own and love their complete catalog. I really enjoyed the progression each album has taken into developing their sound. I enjoyed Overton Park, and was anxious to see what the next step was sound wise. I have to say I'm kinda meh about the album, musically it's great but is didn't strike me the way the bands other albums have. I was hoping to hear the next logical step with their sound, but this album makes me feel like they just slowed down Overton Park songs. They writing and the over all compositions are fantastic but just not what I was expecting
Bottom line, pick this up if you're a fan but if you are looking to "get into" the band, start with either Nobody's Darling or Rebels, Rouges, & Sworn Brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a love letter to Memphis March 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
In addition to their signature guitar riff and the blue-collar-poetic lyrics, one of the great pleasures of listening to each Lucero album is the genre irreverent layering of instruments and an evolving sound that captures a group of musicians becoming more and more themselves.

On their website, Lucero describes Women and Work as a love song to Memphis, and Nichols is quoted as saying, "You work all week, thinking about women and the weekend...'Downtown' is Friday night, `Go Easy' is Sunday morning. The rest of the record is the party in between."

However, it seems to me that Lucero's Memphis-much like Joyce's Dublin- is a metaphorical place we all have access to no matter our location.

It's a place where the fairy tale veneer has all rubbed off. Where lovers are friends, and you're always taking a chance. It's a place where desire doesn't demand perfection and the heroine of the story is "...a superhero down on her luck [who] drinks like a sailor at the bottom of the sea, but she sings like a siren in the belly of the beast."

It's a place where we don't have to hide the worn out and failed pieces of our hearts.
