This just cries for jigs and reels,
This review is from: Women of the World: Celtic II (Audio CD)
Women of the World: Celtic II is quite an excellent CD, filled with techno mixed and modernized music of the Celtic peoples. This CD provides great examples of the wonderful music played by the Celts. Being part Scotts and English, I was quite interested in this style of music to begin with, and I am not dissapointed at all with this CD. I, however, don't recommend this CD to people who aren't fans of this style! If you don't like Celtic music to begin with, then I doubt you'll be interested in this, and the 30 second demos do this CD no justice. Natalie MacMaster's "The Drunken Piper", while as I could see had no piping in it, had excellent fiddling and is a great way to open up the CD. Over all, this CD totally deserves a 5/5, if not more!

I basically only got this cd for "The Drunken Piper" which I heard on the UPN show "Legacy" (more on that later). After tracking it down and listening to all the rest of the songs, I was even happier that I found 11 great songs to go along with my favorite "Drunken." My only hesitation with the selections is that a lot are sung in gaelic- which isn't bad if you know gaelic- but kind of difficult to sing-along if you don't know it. I probably would've preferred more Irish (rather than Scotish) artists, but that's just me. Regardless of where they are from these women are great. Speaking of talented women, Loreena McKennitt is another artist (though not on this CD) that I tracked down from "Legacy." Her "Mummer's Dance" plays during the opening credits- and yet another well-worth-it CD. FYI- I don't know how many people watch UPN, but "Legacy" seems to be a hotbed of good Celtic music. Happy listening!

One of my all-time favourite CDs,

I was given a copy of this CD several years ago and it instantly became my favourite cd--it far outstrips the original Celtic Women of the World collection. A wide range of styles are represented, from traditional gaelic to folk, and even though my gaelic isn't strong enough to interpret the all gaelic selections, I appreciate them for their oftentimes haunting beaty. The collection is a treat to listen to, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I particularly enjoyed the renditions of Sovay and Black is the Colour--both very different from traditional arrangements.

One of the best examples of Celtic music available today. Covers a wide range of styles and subjects. Really great recordings. Definitely recommend it for anyone interested in Celtic music.

Brilliant compilation album, by far the best of Putumayo's several Celtic collections. The album's only weakness is the dismaying lack of representation by United States artists (and they are out there, folks). This bias is unfortunately short-sighted, because much of the new direction of Celtic music is coming from North America and the States in particular. On the plus side, some of the lesser known ladies of Celtic music are featured here, and the selections are lovely and exciting. My favorites: "The Drunken Piper," "Black is the Colour," and "Mi Le M'Uilinn. Really marvellous to see the energy and originality coming out of these 'younger' artists.

This is one of the best Irish music cd Ive heard! I usually dont like Irish vocals as much as the dance music, but most of the songs on here are awesome, and so much fun to listen to!

It is rare that you find all celtic songs in one album that are each excellent in their own right. I highly recommend this.

Maybe it's too Scottish for me. These voices seem weak and uninteresting to me, compared to Connie Dover, who I love. I find the long musical repetitions too long, although I usually love that feature of Irish music. I liked 'Black is the Colour", Ta Se Na La ( though it's too long) and "It Ain't Funny" - love the instrumental finish to that one. I find practically none of the haunting or lilting beauty I expected.
