About the Author

In 17 seasons as an NCAA Division I head coach, Paul Sanderford knows what it takes to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. After all, he has led his teams to the Big Dance 14 times, including three trips to the NCAA Women's Final Four and one trip to the NCAA title game in 1992.

Coach Sanderford led the University of Nebraska Huskers to their highest ranking in school history, guiding Nebraska to No. 11 in the USA Today Top 25 and No. 12 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Dec. 1, after leading the Huskers to a runner-up finish in the Preseason National Women's Invitation Tournament. He helped Nebraska tie school records with 23 wins overall and 11 conference victories, while piloting the Huskers to the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Nebraska's appearance in the NCAA Tournament was the fourth in school history, and the Huskers' 76-59 win over New Mexico in the tournament's first round in Norfolk, Va., was just the second NCAA victory in Husker history. While national rankings and NCAA Tournament wins are relatively new for Nebraska, they are common for Sanderford. In 15 years as the head coach at Western Kentucky, Sanderford took the Lady Toppers to 12 NCAA Tournaments, three Final Four appearances and the 1992 national championship game. He owns a career record of 409-142 (.742) and owns a 16-14 record in NCAA Tournament games.

With his extraordinary winning percentage and consistency in leading his teams to the NCAA Tournament, Sanderford has established himself among a select list of women's basketball coaches. Sanderford's 14 appearances in the Big Dance rank in a tie for seventh among active NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches, while his three appearances in the Final Four rank in a tie for fifth all-time at the Division I level. Along with 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, Sanderford coached two WKU teams to the National Women's Invitation Tournament, including a fourth-place finish in 1983-84 and a sixth-place finish in 1995-96. In all, 16 of his 17 teams have advanced to the postseason, with the only exception being his first team at Western Kentucky in 1982-83. That Lady Topper team finished with a solid 22-7 record as the Sun Belt Conference runnerup to Old Dominion, which advanced to the 1983 NCAA Final Four.
