This book is a MUST READ for migraineurs & their families,

My best friend suffers from migraines and I wanted to get her a book that might help. I chose Dr. Peterson's book because it was the one with the latest information. I read it to better understand what my friend is going through and learned that: a) A migraine it isn't just a headache and some migraines are menstrual b) There are all sorts of alternative treatments available c) Headache sufferers had rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) d) There are lifestyle changes (such as avoiding foods) and therapy options (emotional issues can cause headaches) that can help headache sufferers. Finally a knowledgeable doctor who talks TO you, not down to you. I also found that Dr. Peterson practices in my state (Oregon) and, after doing a little detective work, found she is taking new patients! Best of all, my friend Marie LOVED the book as it helped her understand that she was not alone and that there was help out there.

I'm 16 and have had migraines my whole life. My mom and I went from doctor to doctor for years trying to figure out what my headaches were all about. when we finally found the right doctor, she gave me some medacine that accually works and had me start a migraine journal. I hadn't followed my doctors like I should have, I didn't write down what I was feeling, because I didn't know how to describe it. But when I found this book and read it cover to cover, I finally realized that I'm not aelone and discovered a way to describe my symptoms. After only a fiew months of following what my doctor and the book told me to do, I've found what triggers my headaches, and how I can manage them, prevent them, and avoid them. So this is a wonderful book with useful information that will help anyone and everyone weather they get migraines or not understand what migraines are all about.

Not very helpful if you've already done research on your own,

I've been under the care of a neurologist for 3 years because of severe menstrual migraines. I've also done extensive research online - about migraines and the drugs I've been prescribed. I did not feel like this book told me anything new. It also did not include the most up-to-date information about new drugs, including small doses of epilepsy medication for migraine sufferers. I DID find the "migraine diary" to be helpful. If you are unsure of the cause of your migraines, this tool could prove useful.

Better Books out there,

If you have been dealing with migraines/headaches for some time, this book offers nothing new. Also, if you don't want to get trapped on the strong drug regimen you'll learn no alternative methods here. Obviously, Dr. Peterson is in the camp of pushing drugs by large pharmacutical corporations.
Keep reading, there are better books for learning how to deal with migraines. Try "The Miracle of Magnesium" by Carolyn Dean, or check out Dr. John Lee's website. There are many other type treatments you can try that aren't promoted in this book. Be wary of the HRT types in this book too....look for natural alternatives.

Right after I got the book I immediately opened it and started reading. I couldn't put in down. It helped me to understand my migraines a lot better. I would recommend this to any man or woman that lives with this disease ever day as so many of us do.

Getting off drugs should be a migraine sufferers goal, not taking more drugs. "Heal Your Headache" by David Buchholz worked for me after 18 years of being pumped full of every drug known to man. Sure, the first few weeks of no drugs and following the diet plan were difficult, but living a pain free life is a small price to pay! His book is worth its weight in gold. Be VERY WARY of any doctor who wants to continually "try this drug" over and over and over. I have followed Dr. Buchholz' plan for 7 years with amazing success.

Thoughtful, well researched writing useful to those first diagnosed, as well as those referring to it at a later date- during treatment. This volume provides some hope for those failing to respond to one therapy or another that something WILL work in the long run, be it pharmacotherapy, or via alternative medicine. A true bible of information, coping methods, and best of all, a true sense that you are not alone in your pain. Two thumbs up.
