Book Description

September 12, 2000
• Easy-to-use A-Z format — features profiles of 300 drugs
• Vital information on side effects and drug interactions
• Cutting-edge research on the latest drug therapies ... and much more

Know the facts about the drugs you take.

With two thirds of the more than 1.6 billion prescriptions a year written for women, there’s an urgent need for a clear, concise resource to help sort through the confusing — and often contradictory — bombardment of information and advertising for the drugs we take.

This authoritative guide provides an essential list of the drugs used exclusively by women — fertility drugs, contraceptives, breast cancer drugs, estrogens — plus drugs for cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other health problems that affect women in greater numbers than men.

It features:
• 200 prescription drug profiles covering more than 300 drugs
• Each drug’s brand name, generic name, classification, dosage, side effects, drug and food/alcohol interactions, and pregnancy/nursing risks
• New research on which drugs affect women differently than men
• Facts even your doctor may not know
• Questions to ask the pharmacist — before you take the drug
• Cautions for ordering drugs over the Internet
• Special warnings for seniors
• A guide to nonprescription and over-the-counter medications

Plus — a special women’s resource directory for health-related issues and Web site addresses

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Catalano (The Mexican Americans) and Rowan (How To Control High Blood Pressure Without Drugs) have attempted to create "a convenient, easy-to-use pill guide covering the most often prescribed drugs that may be of primary interest to women." Unfortunately, the material in the introduction and appendix, which includes questions to ask the pharmacist and a list of health organizations, is readily available elsewhere, and the information given for the drugs does not include recommended dose ranges or differentiate between side and adverse effects. While the book is indeed easy to use and inexpensive, libraries would make better use of their budget by purchasing The Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs (HarperCollins, 2000), Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs (Perigee, 1999), or The Complete Drug Reference (Consumer Reports, 2000). Only large collections devoted to women's health need consider this book.DNatalie Kupferberg, Biological Sciences/Pharmacy Lib., Ohio State Univ., Columbus

5.0 out of 5 stars The Women's Pharmacy: An Essential Guide to What Women Shoul, November 28, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Women's Pharmacy: An Essential Guide to What Women Should Know About Prescription Drugs (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a fantastic little reference book -- a must for every woman's bookshelf. It has all the essential ingredients: easy to navigate, loaded with information, written in language anyone can understand. I can't tell you how often I've turned to this book. I used to go from one "guidebook" to the next, searching for information about medications. Now I've learned -- this is the first one I go to and, invariably, it's the only one I need. Thank you, Julie Catalano! Your book is a lifesaver!
