Perfect Mittens,
This review is from: Womens Sheepskin Leather Fur Mittens Black (Apparel)
Over the winter months my gloves were not keeping my hands warm and I purchased these wonderful sheepskin mittens that do the job. They are sytlish and comfortable. The service was great. They came in just days after ordering them.

Think twice about getting the black ones. They're dyed and they get black crud under my fingernails every single time I wear them. Gross. Otherwise they're great mittens. But I will have to order the natural ones next time.

I have owned a pair of leather mittens before. Leather mittens are far superior in warmth than gloves and can be used for driving, which is important here in the northeast. My last pair didn't come close to the quality and price of the new pair that I ordered from Gem. When the company add says their mittens are warm, they aren't kidding. The lining of these mittens is also important. My last pair were lined with rabbit fur and if my hands were even slightly damp before the mittens were put on then the rabbit hair tended pull out when the mittens were taken off. These mittens from Gem absorb that moisture and the hands feel warm right away.

These are very soft and also very flexible. They are warm and nice.
I normally do not wear mittens because I really need to use my fingers a lot. I feel very cramped in a mitten. In previewing this review, I see I'm listed as being in Pasadena, California. Yes - part time. The rest of the time it's New England, which is why I needed hand warmers in winter. I got these for rollerblading in the Boston area along the causeway to the Nahant island in very cold weather. I wear wrist guards when I skate, and needed a hand warmer that could fit OVER the wrist guards. I ordered a size much larger than I normally wear to accommodate the wrist guard. These do the trick very well, but you have to take one off to make skate adjustments, or twist off the cap of a water bottle for a drink. Or to pick car keys out of a pocket. (In my online search for proper gear, I since discovered a different type of hand warmer that is even better for me for this purpose: The new glove mittens with flip tops! So I can make skate adjustments without removing them.) But these were so nice and soft and pretty, anyway, that I gave them to my fiancé, who has big hands. He uses them. If I were a mitten person (and not a glove person), I might get a smaller pair for other needs, though, such as shopping (where you remove them inside a building) or hiking (when you don't need your fingers.) They are casual, a little bit floppy, and a fast on-off. No fussing to get each finger out of each finger hole. I see other users say that they use them for driving. I could never use a mitten for driving . . . either with stick OR automatic. In my mind it would be very unsafe, no matter HOW great the mitten is. I just need my fingers too much. But, if you like mittens, these are great. Not having bought many mittens before, I'm assuming that the sale price on these is a pretty good deal since NON leather ones in fleece are $12 or so, and these are real sheepskin that is soft and flexible. They are NOT that sturdy, outdoor, heavy duty, rough-and-tumble work mitten type, in case you're looking for those. These are the more pliable ones with thinner leather. I can't tell you if the dye runs or not because I haven't worn them that much, or if they are waterproof in the snow. I'd guess not, and that it might be wise -- if you're going to be handling snowy things -- to use one of those grocery store bought water proofing sprays for when the snow melts. People end up just brushing snow off windshields. But once you're in the car with the heater on, the snow will melt, and I can see how these might easily get wet in cases like that. That might stain them, though I think the shearling insulation inside would still keep your hands warm. |
