Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Don't be dismayed because this looks like a textbook. Guttmann, author of The Games Must Go On ( LJ 1/84), does an excellent job of tracing the history of women's sports from antiquity to the present. First, he uses extensive and thorough research to explore the social and cultural contexts of women's athletics in ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Subsequently, he discusses the subject's current state, in which he unflinchingly exposes controversial issues which threaten the development of women's sports. He includes fascinating profiles of important female competitors and those involved in the field. Guttmann has filled a gap historically ignored. A definitive index also makes his study a superb reference tool.
