5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent selection of important female artists
As a long-time fan of Ani DiFranco, I was thrilled to find this rocking, live version of "Cradle and All". I didn't know any of the other artists, but soon grew to love them. This has become one of those albums I can't live without! The CD includes quite a few up-and-comers, all of whom I hope begin gaining the widespread attention they deserve. Most of the...

Overall, this is a really good CD with some excellent songs. I just received it about a week ago, and have listened to it several times since. With the exception of the Toni Childs song (incredibly annoying) and the Ani DiFranco song (I realize there are a lot of her fans out there and she has a wonderful voice and some great lyrics, but I have a hard time listening to...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent selection of important female artists, June 5, 1998

Most of the songs have a folk edge to them, but a couple break the mold. The songs tend to not be overtly political, focusing mostly on stories of things that happen to women. Many of these stories will ring a familiar chord. If you are a fan of contemporary women's music and are looking to expand your horizons, this album is the perfect starting point!

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover great singer songwriters, January 11, 2001
This review is from: Women's Work (Audio CD)
This CD is one I bought at random, because I happened to like the cover, and it's one I've never regretted. It rarely leaves my CD player for long. If you're looking for real lyrics that have some true poetry in them, sung by beautiful voices, and accompanied with actual music, then you've found the right CD. There are a few tracks that I don't care for, but that's to be expected. Barbara Kessler's "Notion" is perfect, and Eliza Gilkyson's "Wild Horses" makes me cry every time. I've discovered several new artists from this CD that have since become some of my favorites. God bless Putamayo. Buy the CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars an all 'round winner, March 27, 2000

Women's Work appealed to me because I saw its cover in my CD club magazine; the only artist I really "knew" was Vonda Shepard. In the 9 months since I have bought the album it has grown into one of my must-haves. Aside from a couple of grating songs (I could do without tracks 10 and 13 -- Laura Love and Toni Childs, respectively), this CD is full of intelligent, real songs. A big thumbs-up goes to Toshi Reagon and Janis Ian! If you like newer folk music, if you're in Pittsburgh and listen to WYEP, then you'll enjoy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unbeatable collection of women singers, October 3, 1998

This review is from: Women's Work (Audio CD)
This CD is a collection of powerful and diverse female voices. Women's Work provides a good introtuction to a variety of women singers. Because it includes a variety of styles, most everyone will find something they can relate too. I strongly reccomend this CD to anyone who wants to add some flavor to their CD collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can find this, grab it!!!!, June 25, 2009
This review is from: Women's Work (Audio CD)
I found "Women's Work" in a used bin for a good price and grabbed it because it's Putomayo. In my experience, there really is no bad Putomayo CD. If you find one you think is, please send it to me.

This is a 13 song collection that will make you the listener feel very fortunate to have found it. Many of the artists are familiar and some are brand new treats. I've had this CD in the player for 3 days and can't quite seem to stop playing it.

What I found:

"Wild Horse" by Eliza Gilkyson. I have loved Eliza for years and this song is one of her best. Just gorgeous.

"Off the Ground" by Christine Kane. If this is any indication of the rest of her repertoire, I'm after her CDs next. Great personal anthem.

"Maryland" by Vonda Shepherd. I like her, but I love this song.

You can get this CD at bargain prices from some reliable sellers. I'd grab it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Female Singer-Songwriter Must Have, January 11, 2001
This review is from: Women's Work (Audio CD)
This was one of those CD's I bought at random, and it's one of the few I've never regretted. This CD is rarely out of my car or off my CD player at home. I'm always looking for more singer songwriters, and this is a gold mine. Barbara Kessler's "Notion" is perfect - the lyrics are a testament to her voice. Eliza Gilkyson's "Wild Horses" has made me cry more times than I can count; I, too, want wild horses to carry me away some times. There are a couple of tracks that I don't care for, but that's to be expected on a mixed CD designed by someone else. God bless Putamayo. Buy the CD.

With the exception of the Toni Childs song (incredibly annoying) and the Ani DiFranco song (I realize there are a lot of her fans out there and she has a wonderful voice and some great lyrics, but I have a hard time listening to her since she choses so many (annoying) singing styles throughout one song). I think there are better Putumayo CDs out there with a lot of the same artists - but overall this rates a 3.5 star with me. Just my opinion.

Women's Work is a great collection of female voices. The styles are all very different but every song on this CD is sung from the heart.
