Lisa Mitchell is just great. Her first two Ep's "Welcome To The Afternoon" & "Said One To The Other" both had some amazing tracks on them, but as with most EP's, were lacking a little maturity and experience. Now with the release of her debut full length album, all those mistakes are fixed. The maturity is there and the songs are crafted perfectly which show her experience. Now this album is not perfect, one or two of the songs are a little un interesting but the majority are just fantastic. Favourites are: "Neapolitan Dreams, Coin Laundry, Pirouette, Oh Hark" Well worth the money.

My daughter discovered Lisa Mitchell on youtube. We finally got this album for her for Christmas. Unfortunately, it's not available in the US, so it's a bit more expensive than regular CD's. This is very fun, whimsical, easy to listen to music. Much more intelligent than a lot of other music that typical 14 year old girls listen to. I love the fact that she writes her own stuff and that it's serious, but playful music. Definitely father approved.

I love this record and pretty much anything she has done thus far. She has this brittle old school sounding vibe to her music that permeates it, yet it feels relevant. Songs like Coin Laundry and Red WIne Lips and Valium just have this warm sound that washes over. There is a misstep or two on this record, but it has more solid songs than anyting. I can't wait for more music from this "Wonder" and hope she doesn't change a thing.

I had never heard of Lisa Mitchell until I heard her song "Coin Laundry" and immediately fell in love with her music. She has a very unique way of singing that some people object to but I think really works for her. Her lyrics are amazing and the instrumental accompaniment is unique for each song and I always get something more out of her songs each time I hear them. I just love the emotions and feelings she puts into her music. Her earlier music is very good but I think that Wonder is easily her best album yet. I bought this album when I only knew two or three of the songs and I was a little hesitant but I could only find a few of her songs alone. So I bought it anyway and I now love every song. It was defiantly worth it and I would recommend this album to anyone interested in music.

I actually thought I'd like this album.I liked it for a little while, well, sort of liked it. I hoped it might grow on me. I can't stand this album now. What's wrong with it? Quite a number of things. Firstly, the affected, "mewing" voice of Lisa Mitchell. I think she needs to get to a singing teacher as fast as possible and learn to open up her and stop her lazy singing from the throat. Trying to sound like a "cute little old lady" when you're so young might seem novel (it isn't), but it doesn't wear well after one or two songs. Mitchell's voice does not even seem to have a one octave span - at best, she seems to cover a range of about a 6th, which may be fine for a very established singer or songwriter, but is lamentable in one at the beginning of her career. Mitchell's musical accompaniment ranges from pleasant to downright annoying. The key words I would use to describe this album are pretentious, amateurish, affected, twee and maudlin. The world, and Australia in particular, does not need yet another various on the dreary Missy Higgins/Sarah Blasko/Clare Bowditch formula, and yet here were are, yet again, with another oh-so-serious young woman, writing and singing bummer songs with an affected voice. When will it stop? |
