3.0 out of 5 stars The speech makes me wonder.
My children love this little series. As a parent though, hearing the speech impediment of the duck is like nails on a chalk board. An example is when they sing "There's an animal on trouble", hers comes out as "Daez an animaw in twubo." Or you don't know if "feewa" is feel or fear.
If your children are having trouble with pronunciation, I would not recommend...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok, so there're these baby animals, and they sing opera... and they save even younger animals from trouble?, September 18, 2007

That's pretty much it. Any fan of theater, operetta and, well singing animals, would be a fan of the Wonder Pets. And I should know, I don't have any kids... That you can prove...

But seriously- for the uninitiated, the Wonder Pets is a half hour series on the Nickelodian network supposedly geared towards the Nick Jr. audience but in actuality attractive to lovers of music theater and, per the above, baby singing animals. Regardless of age. Each half hour installment is (barring one or two exceptions) composed of two smaller fifteen minute mini-sodes wherein Linny the Guinnea Pig, Tuck the Turtle and Ming Ming Duckling (three schoolroom mascots) set out on various rescue missions, after the kids go home. Each episode centers around one central theme: teamwork. The Wonder Pets, being youngsters themselves, must make up for their lack of size by using teamwork, smarts and well, lots of musical numbers.

Each episode is composed like an operetta, steeping itself in sung dialogue, and leit motif, and spans a slew of musical genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to Hip Hop, from Gospel to pop. The show has been host to such guest composers as Michael John LaChiusa (Bernarda Alba, See What I Wanna See, The Wild Party) Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World, Parade) and Bobby Lopez (Avenue Q, Finding Nemo, Scrubs) to name but three. The full list is not surprisingly brimming with Broadway heavy hitters.

I'm actually such a fanatic of this show that I downloaded every episode that is currently available on iTunes straight to my iPod, where they have lived ever since. That would be exactly one half of season one. It's unclear whether the other half of Season 1 or for that matter, any of Season 2 will become availabe in the future.

But in the meantime, fanatics like myself will be happy to know that this DVD and its predecessor ("Save the Wonderpets" also available on Amazon.com) both contain other episodes not currently available for download.

Save the Unicorn also features the episodes: Save the Three Little Pigs/Save the Owl and Save the Bullfrog/Save the Poodle, both of which (or, all four of which, depending on how you do the math) are not currently on iTunes. And for good measure it also includes Save the Puppy/Save the Swan which, if you're like me, you already have.

The disc also comes with a few special features but at the time of this writing I have not viewed them and can therefore not give you any insight into how cool they are.

All in all, it's definitely a worthy addition to my DVD collection, whether it sits on a shelf next to Citizen Kane, Bang the Drum Slowly and Red Sorgum or on a shelf by itself next to Save the Wonder Pets and Save the Reindeer though, still remains to be seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Are a "Wonder", November 4, 2007

The adorable Wonder Pets are loved by all ages. My younger granddaughter has just turned one and has watched them since she was quite small. Even my 8 year old granddaughter sheepishly confesses that she loves them too. What's not to love? They teach teamwork, helping others, positive attitudes and more. The different circumstances in which they find themselves are creative and there is much to learn about the particular animal they are helping, or the geographical area they will travel to and they teach logical thinking and problem solving. Who can resist "Ming Ming's" baby talk? I highly recommend the Wonder Pets series!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem solving for 3-4 four year olds, May 4, 2008

All the DVDs are great for introducing new concepts when trying to solve a problem. My 4 year old niece has been in love with the wonder pets since the first time she saw the show.

Each show begins with an animal in trouble. The wonder pets race to the rescue overcoming obstacles on the way.

What the shows on the DVD are trying to teach:

Save the Unicorn: A baby unicorn gets his horn stuck in a tree. Very cute. Introduces the concept of tightening and loosening screws. A more important lesson, I think, is the wonder pets believing the dragon was mean after seeing him, then realizing he was friendly after meeting him.

Save the Penguin: A baby penguin is stuck on an iceberg. Stresses the importance of working together, using everyone's abilities to help. Ducks are good at flying, Turtles are good at swimming.

Save the Swan: A baby swan is afraid to join the big dance show because he doesn't dance as well as others. "Try your best, your own way" seems to be the lesson. It's okay to be different.

Save the Puppy: I need to Pee! A pup is locked in the house and has to potty. He's never used his doggie door so the wonder pets must help him get outside. Tries to encourage little ones to try new things to solve problems.

For the past few months, my favorite TV shows have been House and Wonderpets. All Wonderpets episodes are practically the same, so it doesn't really matter which DVD you get. My fiance's son loves this series and I do too. So much effort is put into the music and animation, and it always makes me laugh.

My daughter started watching Wonder Pets a few months ago, and now I think we have all the dvd's that are currently out. They are cute, short(12 minute) episodes, that hold my daughters attention. They teach good lessons, like sharing and teamwork. Plus they are full of singing and music!!!
