Chevelle's new album is very very good, and for any other band I would give it at least four stars. However, this new album just doesn't hold up to the incredible job that they did with Point #1, which is probably one of my favorite rock records since it came out in 99.

The album is a lot heavier than Point #1, and Pete Loeffler tends to resort to screaming a lot when...

Some people call them boring, uninspired, and overplayed. Overplayed for The Red and Send the Pain Below might be right, but when you get your hands on this CD and hear the rest of what Chevelle offers, your opinion about them being boring and uninspired will change.

Wonder Whats Next is a great rock CD that offers several different tempos, moods, and concepts. Chevelle can play several create several different atmospheres with just 3 members. The pounding opener Family System showcases an pounding riff that will catch fans of the radio tunes slightly off guard. This happens again in the title track, which is definetely the standout track of the album. It has a variety of grooves that make it a really amazing song.

More or less in a nutshell, don't judge them based on the singles...listen to the whole album and you will see just how talented this band really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album Is a Masterpiece!, January 27, 2003
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
I first got turned on to Chevelle when i was watching MTV late at night (since that's the ONLY time they ever play rock) The single that got me Was of course "The Red" I was digging the vocals and the Grinding Guitar riffs, Then i was Reeled in at the chorus right when the music pauses and the singer Says "So Lay..." and kicks back in with heavy distortion when The singer says "...Down" The harmonies are simply Astounding on the chorus. Not to mention The ending when he repeats "Seeing Red Again!" in an awesome Scream/growling voice, and trust me, I play the Drums and sing, and i have had to Scream that, afterwards i felt like the lyrics should of been "Turning Red Again" cause i definitely was after singing it. I waited anxiously for their CD to release, and when it did i got it,and Was blown away by the first track "Family System" The whole CD is Incredibly heavy but melodic as well. The lyrics are often easily related to.

Here is a track Break Down:

1-Family System:From the dark,Mysterious Intro to the Final "Scream" this song is a great song with Melodic Vocals,Driving Drum beats and "Kick you in your teeth" Guitar riffs-10/10
2-Comfortable Liar:Moody vocals intertwined with growling, awesome Harmonies as well,A little Repetitive, but darn good-8/10
3-Send The Pain Below:Some more Heavy Grindage,and Driving Drum Beat,Moody Vocals,and Deep Lyrics.-9/10
4-Closure: Wow...Wow is all i can say about this song, a slower song on the album,Dark Lyrics and Rhythm,It doesn't stay slow for long though before The singer Rips out this Monstrosity of a Growl/scream towards the end,not to mention the Shattering Glass Sample you hear when it kicks back in for the ending, which is Laced with a "Sub-Woofer" Slam of bass. by far one of the cooler songs on the disc.-10/10
5-The Red:Their first Single, what else can i say?-10/10
6-Wonder What's Next:The title track is probably the most driving Song on the disc, Fueled with Freaky (but cool) Lead guitar riffs on the intro,The singer sings in a Growl thorough the whole song not to mention the chorus part where he Growls"I wonder whats Next!?...." and whispers "Nothing" is way cool.-10/10
7-Don't Fake This:It starts off sorta medium paced, and stays that way till the chorus when some heavier Distortion Kicks in,and the Mid part of the song is laced with the almighty Screaming of "SO DON'T, FAKE THIS!!,DON'T FAKE THIS...."-9/10
8-Forfeit: Another song that all i can say is WOW,Moody,Fighting Lyrics,Alot of Voice Fluctuation,it can get a little repetitive,But an awesome Riff and Lyrics, with some awesome Drumming-10/10
9-Grab Thy Hand:the intro is simply amazing and that drum fill sounds quite Difficult in the beginning as it plays around his Vocals, Immeadiately kicking into a Scream after "Grab thy hand and..."-9/10
10-An Evening With El Diablo:Probably another of their calmer songs on the CD,Bass Dominant Rhythm on the verse which is a reminder of Staind's "MudShovel", With some distortion on the Brief Chorus. 8/10
11-One Lonely Visitor: Now this Last song has me baffled,It is all acoustic with the singer, and it sounds like they are playing live in some Small club somewhere.(you can hear an audience singing along with the words, like it's a worship at a christian concert) It doesn't fit with any of the Driving tunes on the CD, But not that bad of a tune overall. 6/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there...but never quite like this., July 15, 2003
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
Wonder What's Next? Hopefully several more albums from this very talented group of guys. While being compared to the likes of Taproot and Live, I believe that Chevelle actually surpasses the music of the two aformentioned rock bands, and does so admirably. Many of the songs on this disk mine emotions that rock fans are used to dealing with: Anger, Distrust, Disappointment, Rage, and Loss. However, Chevelle has somehow found a way to make these subjects sound and feel fresh. Comfortable Liar, a bass-thumping riff-heavy ode to betrayal, gets deep in your gut and lingers there. The Red, a critical look at acceptance and disapproval really makes you think about how you may have treated people in your past, and the consequences you may receive for it. Highly recommended.

Standout tracks:

Family System
Send the Pain Below
The Red
Comfortable Liar
Forfeit
An Evening with El Diablo

I had hoped Chevelle would make an album like this after their debut, Point #1. The songs have come out heavier, more polished, and (in my opinion) better on this go round, while still keeping the rough sound of Point #1.

Songs like "Wonder What's Next", "Comfortable Liar", and "Family System" have thick grinding riffs and shout vocals combined with heavy pounding drums.

"Send the Pain Below" and "The Red" feature catchy choruses and thick guitar chords.

"An Evening with El Diablo" is just one hell of a rock song. Great bass riff, great guitar riff, and on point drumming combined with a sing a long chorus (in a dark way) make for my favorite song on the album.

"One Lonely Visitor" is a somber acoustic way to end the album...it's done very well.

Overall, this album is heavier than the previous, and is certainly catchier in many aspects. Chevelle have put together a great collection of songs that will please fans of heavy rock music.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY DON'T WE HEAR ABOUT THIS ARTIST MORE!!??, December 19, 2002

This CD is really amazing! I play it everyday, have done so for a while, and I still don't get tired of it.

The music sounds really heavy and dark at times, yet vulgarity is nonexistant in this album!

1. Family System - Powerful song! It rocks!
2. Comfortable Liar - Probably my 3rd favorite song on the track! At times I feel as if I can personally identify with what he is saying. lol
3. Send the Pain Below - This is the song that brought me to find this artist-- A+++++++
4. Closure - Good song as well, a little different the the first 3 in that it is a little less hevy, although Snd the Pain below is not terribly heavy like Comfortable Liar is.
5. The Red - Very popular song, I heard it in the past but never paid much attention to it even though it was a great song.
6. Wonder Whats Next - Great song, powerful meaning!
7. Dont Fake This - A favorite of mine!
8. Forfeit - 'Strong' song... another song I can identify with at times.... the part "I want to fight...I want to prove I'm right..." My second favorite of the album!
9. Grab Thy Hand - Heavy rock song, but really killer!
10. An Evening With El Diablo - I have to say that this song is my favorite, I am suprised I haven't heard it more around! I've played this song countless times and it only gets better!
11. One Lonely Visitor - The album's only 'quiet' song... not much of a beat, but good for relaxing you after such a strongly rhythmed album.

Aside from "One Lonely Visitor", each song has that 'head-bob' thing going with it. If you like a strong beat, and gutiar...or if you just like rock...don't hesitate at all to get this CD!!

The Amazon reviewer's got a point about lots of modern rock sounding alike... But the almost operatic vocals and intensely personal lyrics (at times sounding like the ranting of someone barely holding their sanity together, at times perfect clarity, it's beautiful) are what make Chevelle truly stand out. I don't know what I expected when I opened the CD, but this picture of three unbelievably ordinary looking guys was a surprise. These brothers make a big noise, you can hear that they've been playing together a long time, and I'm looking forward to more in the vein of "The Red," "Send the Pain Below," "Comfortable Liar" and "Closure." And that beautiful, beautiful voice. So nice to hear a rocker who doesn't either rap or whine these days! Looking forward to watching Chevelle mature as a band...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Wish I had your faults, nothing seems to faze you.", April 28, 2006
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying I can't really explain why I love Wonder What's Next so much. Looking at it completely objectively and analytically, it's not that different from other music by similar artists in the genre. It follows an obvious pattern of standard hard rock for a few minutes, culminating in a cacophonous climax with screaming vocals. It's kind of hard for me to justify such a high rating, but I can't ignore a simple fact - I love this collection of songs almost as much as any other.

As a band, Chevelle writes more than competent rock music. Most songs contain some riff or melody that makes every song memorable. But that's not why I like them. I like them because of the vocals. The singer, despite being able to destroy his vocal chords pretty well, doesn't use that skill too much like some other bands fall into. The guy can sing as well, and his soft, pleasant voice serves as a great counterpoint to the hard guitar stuff. What I like best about their music is the choruses they write with extended, melodic vocal parts that really show off that counterpoint. It just hits me in a way that's affecting unlike most other music.

I love all of the songs, but some of them are a cut above. The first two tracks, "Family System" and "Comfortable Liar" are very strong and put you in the mood for the rest before being followed by the album's three good singles. "Don't Fake This" has probably my favorite vocals of the whole record, and "An Evening with El Diablo" contains both a great chorus and an extended rock out section. Like I said, it's not really objectively that far above other stuff in the genre, but it's exactly the kind of music that I like.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Really Do Wonder What's Next for Chevelle..., March 12, 2003

Bubbles (United States) - See all my reviews

Amidst major artists last year putting out less than par albums, new bands seemed to rule the airwaves with albums that many times went unnoticed or unbought. However, I decided to check out this new band Chevelle since I heard a track by them on Daredevil and enjoyed it and wow...amazing band. On first listen, the lead singer reminds you a little of the Incubus singer only harder but also mixes in elements that I've only heard with A Perfect Circle. "Family System" opens the album hardhitting..not bad at all and a great way to start the adrenaline pumping. "Comfortable Liar" follows with a crashing guitar at the beginning and deep drumming...lyrically this song is amazing and the many ranges of the vocalist makes it even more interesting...top song. "Send the Pain Below" follows in the grittier rock direction and proves to be yet another greaet song. "Closure" is the lightest track in the first section of the album...lyrically it's very innovative and keeps you on each end of the word going to the next...very inventive and amazing. "The Red", the first single, demonstrates how this band really rocks with amazing guitars and drums but also the crashing lyrics in the middle...reminds me of A Perfect Circle but much more improved. "Wonder What's Next" follows and almost takes the intro in a way that mirrors "Family System"..not a bad song but not a stand out track either. "Don't Take This"...okay the vocals opening this track and in the background are just intoxicating and sexy too...lyrically this track is absoultely amazing as well...top song. "Forfeit" is another hard rock sound that almost sounds like bubbles at the beginning..interesting combinations on it and another great song. "Grab Thy Hand" reminds me a little of Sevendust at the beginning but vocally is very diverse...good song. "An Evening With El Diablo"...the title on this song alone is interesting and I like the echo effect on the vocals too...great arrangement and unique as well...another great song. "One Lonely Vistor" has an acoustic feel to it but ends off the album quite nicely but almost too soon, making you want even more...lyrically, it's very sad but still a good song. Chevelle seems to break boundries with a sound that combines maybe elements of other bands but now in a way that refines all the ways plus adding great lyrics. Although the single is great on the album, I see Chevelle exploding very soon and I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than typical commercial rock, November 4, 2003
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
with the release of WWN, Chevelle has taken there gritty unproduced sound to a accessble rock that mtv and radio listeners can get into immeddiately. While they have been lumped into the same group as Trapt, Seether, Breaking Benjamin etc, I feel that they surpass these commercial rock acts in originality and emotion. Pete Loeffler really knows how and when to use his amazing scream in songs to really pull as much emotion as possible out of the song. His guitar licks are nothing special, but incredibly powerful and fitting with the rest of the band. Every song on this cd-including "One Lonely Visitor"-really is a masterpiece that can be enjoyed the first time and time again.
"Family System" - intro will blow you away, very anthemic and powerful, one of the heaviest on CD
"Comfortable Lier" - Beat-driven tune that only has two chords throughout, still manages to be incredible in its simplicity.
"Send The Pain Below" - 2nd single, Very melodic except for thrashing bridge. I don't quite see why people think this is one their best, but it's still good none the less
"Closure" - Incredible. I think I can honestly say that this is my favorite song-by anybody-right now. Incredible sense of tension and frustration until the breakout end. Very few songs carry this kind of emotion, both in the words and music.
"The Red" - First single that put Chevelle on the map. Song structure is the strongest point here. Another somewhat tension-built song that ends in a satisfying tantrum followed by a worn-out almost lazy end. Only thing to improve this song would be a better bridge/solo.
"Wonder What's Next" - Probably the most meaningful song lyrics-wise. Somewhat unconventional sound. Another great intro that slowly build to heavy riff for rest of song. This one will take a few listens to get comfortable with.
"Don't Fake This" - excluding singles, first song that will jump out at you at first listen. Very melodic and forward moving, but the end of this song is too drawn out and repetitive. This could be my favorite song if it had a more creative finish.
"Forfeit" - Great song, very boring first few listens. Great lyrics about backing off from a fight. Tight rhythm and incredible breakout during second chorus. unconventional song sturcture, with cool breakdown towards end.
"Grab Thy Hand" - Heavy. From the ominous first guitar riff to the echoing screams at the end, a great slow heavy screamer that will most likely get you a little angry. Pete's vocals are incredible, with screams comparable to Maynard and Chino from Deftones, the two best screamers in music.
"An Evening with El Diablo" -Epic jam session with chilling lyrics to accentuate dark bass and drums. Great ending with long jam until drums fade.
"One Lonely Visitor" - I admit, this is not a radio ready or accesible song that will be universly liked. I, however, think it had great feeling and also pays tribute to the unproduced feel of Point #1. Another great matching of music with lyrics, and a very sad, desperate end.
Well thats it, so if you like commercial rock bands, or even if you like tool, deftones, or audioslave (as I do), then I think you will be surprised by how these homeschooled brothers exceed their genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOODNESS, October 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
I first heard of Chevelle a couple of years ago after "Point #1" came out. I liked a song or two off of that cd, but it didn't really stick with me. Then "The Red" came out, and I downloaded "Comfortable Liar" (incredible song), and I knew I'd be picking this up the day it came out. I haven't stopped listening to it since.

The production on this album is far better than that of their first. The recording captures all of the nuances of their music, and takes Pete Loeffler's voice to another level. A lot of these songs would fit right in on modern rock radio, but don't be decieved, THIS IS NOT THE SAME OLD [stuff] YOU HEAR ON MTV EVERYDAY! There's something else going on here. Chevelle somehow manages to capture an emotion and energy in their music that most new rock bands can only attempt to grasp.

Question: They're not a "Christian band" per se, but they are Christians, right? I think so.

Best tracks: "Family System" "Comfortable Liar" "Closure"(it builds up to the most perfectly violent ending, and if you listen, you can hear glass shattering in the mix) "Grab Thy Hand" and "One Lonely Visitor."
