5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, November 14, 2003

Some people call them boring, uninspired, and overplayed. Overplayed for The Red and Send the Pain Below might be right, but when you get your hands on this CD and hear the rest of what Chevelle offers, your opinion about them being boring and uninspired will change.

Wonder Whats Next is a great rock CD that offers several different tempos, moods, and concepts. Chevelle can play several create several different atmospheres with just 3 members. The pounding opener Family System showcases an pounding riff that will catch fans of the radio tunes slightly off guard. This happens again in the title track, which is definetely the standout track of the album. It has a variety of grooves that make it a really amazing song.

More or less in a nutshell, don't judge them based on the singles...listen to the whole album and you will see just how talented this band really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album Is a Masterpiece!, January 27, 2003
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
I first got turned on to Chevelle when i was watching MTV late at night (since that's the ONLY time they ever play rock) The single that got me Was of course "The Red" I was digging the vocals and the Grinding Guitar riffs, Then i was Reeled in at the chorus right when the music pauses and the singer Says "So Lay..." and kicks back in with heavy distortion when The singer says "...Down" The harmonies are simply Astounding on the chorus. Not to mention The ending when he repeats "Seeing Red Again!" in an awesome Scream/growling voice, and trust me, I play the Drums and sing, and i have had to Scream that, afterwards i felt like the lyrics should of been "Turning Red Again" cause i definitely was after singing it. I waited anxiously for their CD to release, and when it did i got it,and Was blown away by the first track "Family System" The whole CD is Incredibly heavy but melodic as well. The lyrics are often easily related to.

Here is a track Break Down:

1-Family System:From the dark,Mysterious Intro to the Final "Scream" this song is a great song with Melodic Vocals,Driving Drum beats and "Kick you in your teeth" Guitar riffs-10/10
2-Comfortable Liar:Moody vocals intertwined with growling, awesome Harmonies as well,A little Repetitive, but darn good-8/10
3-Send The Pain Below:Some more Heavy Grindage,and Driving Drum Beat,Moody Vocals,and Deep Lyrics.-9/10
4-Closure: Wow...Wow is all i can say about this song, a slower song on the album,Dark Lyrics and Rhythm,It doesn't stay slow for long though before The singer Rips out this Monstrosity of a Growl/scream towards the end,not to mention the Shattering Glass Sample you hear when it kicks back in for the ending, which is Laced with a "Sub-Woofer" Slam of bass. by far one of the cooler songs on the disc.-10/10
5-The Red:Their first Single, what else can i say?-10/10
6-Wonder What's Next:The title track is probably the most driving Song on the disc, Fueled with Freaky (but cool) Lead guitar riffs on the intro,The singer sings in a Growl thorough the whole song not to mention the chorus part where he Growls"I wonder whats Next!?...." and whispers "Nothing" is way cool.-10/10
7-Don't Fake This:It starts off sorta medium paced, and stays that way till the chorus when some heavier Distortion Kicks in,and the Mid part of the song is laced with the almighty Screaming of "SO DON'T, FAKE THIS!!,DON'T FAKE THIS...."-9/10
8-Forfeit: Another song that all i can say is WOW,Moody,Fighting Lyrics,Alot of Voice Fluctuation,it can get a little repetitive,But an awesome Riff and Lyrics, with some awesome Drumming-10/10
9-Grab Thy Hand:the intro is simply amazing and that drum fill sounds quite Difficult in the beginning as it plays around his Vocals, Immeadiately kicking into a Scream after "Grab thy hand and..."-9/10
10-An Evening With El Diablo:Probably another of their calmer songs on the CD,Bass Dominant Rhythm on the verse which is a reminder of Staind's "MudShovel", With some distortion on the Brief Chorus. 8/10
11-One Lonely Visitor: Now this Last song has me baffled,It is all acoustic with the singer, and it sounds like they are playing live in some Small club somewhere.(you can hear an audience singing along with the words, like it's a worship at a christian concert) It doesn't fit with any of the Driving tunes on the CD, But not that bad of a tune overall. 6/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there...but never quite like this., July 15, 2003
This review is from: Wonder What's Next (Audio CD)
Wonder What's Next? Hopefully several more albums from this very talented group of guys. While being compared to the likes of Taproot and Live, I believe that Chevelle actually surpasses the music of the two aformentioned rock bands, and does so admirably. Many of the songs on this disk mine emotions that rock fans are used to dealing with: Anger, Distrust, Disappointment, Rage, and Loss. However, Chevelle has somehow found a way to make these subjects sound and feel fresh. Comfortable Liar, a bass-thumping riff-heavy ode to betrayal, gets deep in your gut and lingers there. The Red, a critical look at acceptance and disapproval really makes you think about how you may have treated people in your past, and the consequences you may receive for it. Highly recommended.

Standout tracks:

Family System
Send the Pain Below
The Red
Comfortable Liar
Forfeit
An Evening with El Diablo
