Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—War and genocide result from a brutal death match between Superman and Wonder Woman, in one of the most riveting "Wonder Woman" story lines in recent years. Under the mind control of the sadistic Maxwell Lord, Superman is sent on a violent path of destruction, attempting to kill not only Batman, but Wonder Woman as well. As this thrilling battle ensues, she learns that the only way to quell Superman is by permanently disarming Max Lord. In a shocking move, she does the unthinkable and snaps his neck, an event that is broadcast via satellite across the globe. Her actions create a profound rift between her and the rest of the patriarch's world as they question the sincerity of her mission as ambassador of peace. Shunned and rejected, she returns to Themyscira to defend her island home against an aggressive retaliation by the OMAC troops. After much bloodshed, the Amazons and their gods retreat to another realm, leaving Wonder Woman alone to face the consequences of her crime. Solid artwork complements Rucka's engrossing, action-filled story about heroism, ethics, and responsibility. This book is a must-read for all DC fans. However, episodes tie in directly with larger events taking place simultaneously in the DC Universe. Many convoluted, ancillary plot developments are fully expounded in two related collections, Superman: Sacrifice (2006) and The OMAC Project (2005, both DC Comics). While Wonder Woman can be read independently, it is recommended that libraries purchase the related books to avoid any confusion.—Philip Charles Crawford, Essex High School, Essex Junction, VT

5.0 out of 5 stars What She Had to..., January 23, 2007
This review is from: Wonder Woman: Mission's End (Paperback)
With her best friend's mind in danger and with the lives of everyone she knows and loves being threatened, Diana will make a decision that affects everything she is and costs her everything she loves.

Diana's role as the premiere champion of Athena is strengthened in this finale to a stunning series. This story has it all, drama, sacrifice and feats of phenomenal power. You will see Diana take the full force of an enraged psychotic Superman... being hurled from Earth to Venus in a split moment, making craters and still holding back. Diana, the erstwhile Alpha Two, the second most powerful being on the planet is shown as a human. Who makes a horrific yet stregic decision to save her friend's life.

That decision cascades out of control. Costs her so much and especially as the story culminates in a war on her home front. The reader will see Diana is what she is and does what she says... but shed a tear for the things she needs to do to win thereby demonstrating her humanity in the face of odds that challenge her to hold back, just barely.

Rucka gives us an engrossing heart felt story of courage, heroism and power with top notch coloring pacing and drama. Kudos!

5.0 out of 5 stars A last battle over Themyscira, November 3, 2006

This review is from: Wonder Woman: Mission's End (Paperback)
When Wonder Woman kills Max Lord for killing several Justice League members as well as controllling Superman; a rogue fighting force is unleashed against the Amazons and her. Standing alone against Brother Eye( a computer program created by Batman to keep watch over the Justice League that went rogue) and OMAC ( a group of hidden soldiers that have now targeted any and all superheroes not following the way of truth and justice) are the women warriors. This is just one of the events that began the whole Infinte Crisis storyline. Another is the death of Sue Didby, the wife of the Elongated Man. Paradise is nearly destroyed but the faith in superheroes is renewed in the end of this book.
