Rock 'n' Roll has always had fads. Something appears, is successful, and a host of imitators invariably appear in short order. Sometimes the fad fades quickly. Other times it maintains and generates a long-lasting genre of music. Well, when rock 'n' roll started, it was almost 100% male dominated. You just know that wasn't going to last. Then a whole series of women-dominated acts appeared in short order and these came to be known as the girl groups. Most were vocal groups only backed up by small studio bands, whereas a lot of contemporary male groups not only sang, but accompanied themselves by playing instruments. Rhino Records compiled a wonderful selection of songs by some of the girl group artists and released the CD "Wonder Women: The History of the Girl Group Sound." Songs by the Dixie Cups, the Shirelles, the Ad Libs, the Jelly Beans, the Butterflys and others fill this compilation album from the girl group era.

Rhino always does a great job of restoring, recording and presenting these compilation packages of oldies. This CD is no exception. The sound is excellent. The choice of songs couldn't be better. The CD is interesting to play in itself, or I like to put together period pieces from early rock 'n' roll and play them through my iPod mixed tpgether with the songs of other acts of that era. In any case, this is an excellent recording to have in your library. The CD is now out of print, but used copies and even some new copies are still available. Enjoy!
