4.0 out of 5 stars very clever idea
with lots of applications.

there are a lot of examples of kay nichols' one fabric quilts that show the possiblities of her technique, but, of course, the idea can be used in quilts with more than one fabric.

she shows how clever piecing can expand the use of all those gorqeous border stripe fabrics. the results are surprising and beautiful. some...

2.0 out of 5 stars Directions fall short
This is a great idea but the instructions are way too vague. Would have been helpful if all examples shown would have shown the fabric and where the cut was made. Saying to cut 42 squares without considering size of repeat really makes it hard to estimate actual size of your quilt & fabric to buy. Does not give size of examples squares. Also, makes a difference where...

with lots of applications.

there are a lot of examples of kay nichols' one fabric quilts that show the possiblities of her technique, but, of course, the idea can be used in quilts with more than one fabric.

she shows how clever piecing can expand the use of all those gorqeous border stripe fabrics. the results are surprising and beautiful. some very precise quilters might not be completely satisfied with the way patterns can meet at the miters without more planning than the author suggests, but this technique can result in a very lovely, reasonably easy quilt.

the quilts in the book range from the romantic to the funky. the photographs and digrams are very clear. the instructions are clear and detailed, though i wouldn't suggest this for a beginner. some experience with piecing is necessary. only general suggestions for quilting and binding the finished top are given, which is fine with me, as this is a book on piecing technique. more information on finishing a quilt is available in many other books.

this book definitely belongs in a quilter's library--not just for the one fabric quilts presented, but as an inspiration to try the technique on other types of prints and include it in multi-fabric quilts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool, September 23, 2007
This review is from: Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts (Paperback)
What caught my eye was the front cover fabric....which I have yards of! In 2 color ways! It's been sitting on my fabric shelve for a long time and I've had no inspirational ideas for it until now.
I think someone with basic quilting skills could use this book but an intermediate quilter will get the most out of it and all the fussy cutting techniques. It does assume you have basic quilting skills, and I'm ok with that. Simple piecing but planned placement are the keys for these quilts. Love them!

Also, makes a difference where on stripe you begin and end cut. Great idea but this book just leaves you hanging. I am an experienced quilter and so is my friend who tried this at the same time and we both drew the same conclusion.. this is the poorest written quilting book we have ever bought. Also, book tends to separate at the binding with minimal use and no folding.

This review is from: Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts (Paperback)
I bought this book and was very excited about making one of these quilts. I looked and looked for fabrics and I was surprised at how many shops don't like to carry the multiple border fabrics. 8 stores later and I did find a bug fabric and a couple of floral prints.
I started with one of the floral prints deciding how I wanted it to look.
I wish the book had went into more detail on the cutting of the blocks before cutting the triangles, with more images of where they cut the different fabrics they used. I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because of this reason. I used the random cut and then stopped as I wasn't happy with how the blocks looked so I will try the fussy cut approach with the rest of the fabric I have. I did cut enough to put it on the design board and could see possibilities of a very nice quilt. I will upload a photo of it when it is done.
You really need a large place wall or floor to put the blocks on so that you can play around with the arrangement of the blocks and be prepared to play with them for a few days. I had just worked on a one block wonder the requires the same thing. This is not a one day quilt due to that reason.
Overall I enjoyed the process and the book was worth it.

I have worked with border prints in the past and I enjoyed the look when I fussy cut an element and then saw it repeated in the block. This book takes that to a new level. I look forward to trying this technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some elaborate sewing techniques., December 2, 2007
This review is from: Wonderful 1-fabric Quilts (Paperback)
Kay Nickols' WONDERFUL 1 FABRIC QUILTS tells how to begin with one border-striped fabric and move on to piece an entire quilt. Blocks, borders and binding can ALL be cut from the same fabric using the technique featured here, which teach some elaborate sewing techniques.

How did Kay Nickols think this up? It amazes me. I have passed this on to my students and they love it. Fantastic results from an easy block.

This book is wonderful. I saw the table runner at the Sydney Craft show . I came home and made it out of the Egyptian range.Turned out fabulous. I have now seen some stripped material that I now wish to make into a queen quilt. Can't wait to start.
