Biography

Four-times-married Doris Day made her name as the wholesome American gal with a hint of sass. Her cinematic career is littered with fine examples of the stereotype, and she has acted, danced and sung her way into the hearts of film-goers everywhere.

She was born on April 3 1924 (or 1922, depends on your source) and her acting career began in 1948, shortly after her separation from her second… Read more in Amazon's Doris Day Store

About the Artist

DORIS DAY (born: Doris Mary Anne Von Kappelhoff - 3rd April 1924 - Cincinnati Ohio, USA)

"Pop icon" and "movie legend" are probably fair descriptions of the American sweetheart who dominated much of the 1950s and ‘60s with her 39 feature films and 16 top40 singles in the UK alone. Who else could I mean but everyone’s favourite girl-next-door Doris Day.

It was in 1946, after a successful run as a band singer, that Doris signed a solo record contract with music giant Columbia Records. This would herald the start of a very productive partnership which would see her capitalise on the popularity she had earned through her work with Les Brown’s band. Already having scored with him a huge million-seller Sentimental Journey (1945), her singing career continued to flourish over an intense 3 decades. This meant hundreds more beautiful Day recordings (some of which are exemplified here) with a variety of hit singles like It’s Magic (1948), Secret Love (1954), Que Sera Sera (1956) and Move Over Darling (1964), as well as countless studio albums which received critical and commercial acclaim.

If this wasn’t impressive enough, in 1947 a very young Doris Day also began her transition into motion pictures, initially signing to Warner Bros. A score of musical and dramatic roles followed, with her career reaching new heights as a result of a glowing performance alongside leading man Rock Hudson in romantic-comedy Pillow Talk (1959). For this role she was nominated at the Oscars for "Best Actress". Soon after Ms. Day had established herself as America’s #1 box-office attraction retaining this prestigious position with further releases such as Lover Come Back (1961) and That Touch of Mink (1962).

During the late 1960s, Doris began slowly but surely taking a step back from Hollywood’s fast paced showbiz world. Leaving the big screen for a succession of hugely popular prime time television shows.

By the mid 1970s, she was all but ready to leave the glitzy spotlight of Tinseltown for the serene comforts of Carmel-by-the-sea. Publishing her memoirs in her #1 best-seller Her Own Story (1975) was her way to close one chapter in order to begin something just as exciting and rewarding.

The now homey star focused her new found time and energy on a cause she had felt for many years very impassioned over. This was the provision of animal welfare for which over subsequent years she was instrumental in establishing animal charities like her current day organisations the Doris Day Animal Foundation and Doris Day Animal League.

No matter whether the Doris Day of today [who fast approaches her landmark 80th birthday in 2004] ever chooses to return to the world of entertainment there is no denying her legacy of music and film will remain forever young in the hearts of the people who discover it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful day for Day addicts, July 19, 2003

Compiled to capitalize on her then-current film "Lover Come Back", 'Wonderful Day' was an Imperial Butter give-away never intended to last more than a few months in shoppers' minds, but at long last it's available on CD(coupled with the corny, but sweetly inspiring 'With a Smile & A Song'). Doris is featured in some of her finest movie-music moments on "Never Look Back", "Possess Me" and "Should I Surrender", not to mention her smash hit "Que Sera, Sera". It's an album that was only available in thrift stores, old record shops and antique barns for years. It's wonderful to have it on disc!

5.0 out of 5 stars For Any Age, October 9, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wonderful Day/With a Smile and a Song (Audio CD)
Ok, this is the proof that I do indeed listen to all the genres. Frankly, I'm a punk rock girl and a real music snob. I should be the last person ever to praise Doris Day. Yet, that is what I'm here to do. As a child, I spent days listening to my Grandama's vinyl. Wonderful Day by Doris remains one of my favorites. The older I get the more I see just how great she is and what an incredible voice she has. Fun, passionate, romantic and a little rebellious, Doris is a singer for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars She's one of the best!, November 13, 2008
This music has been available as part of an eight-CD set of music recorded by Doris Day in the l960's, which is my favorite Doris Day. This lady is one of the pre-eminent voices of the 20th century, a woman who has such a way with a song, a woman with great respect for the songwriter and the voice she was God-given to interpret the music she lent her voice to. My favorite of the two albums featured here is "With A Smile and a Song." Although some are songs written for, say, a Disney movie, they are also songs that we adults of a certain age grew up with and which retain their appeal all of these years later. If you don't have the 8-CD set, I recommend, as it also contains her recording (with Robert Goulet) of the score of "Annie Get Your Gun" and the soundtrack from "Jumbo," which movie I loved when I saw it, featuring wonderful Doris Day performances. And, if you don't have the Doris Day Christmas album, the original with twelve wonderful songs of Christmas, it too will soon be available in new format for the holidays. It's one of several holiday albums I would rank as among the most satisfying for holiday listening.
