4.0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher Resource
I am using this book for bi-weekly tutoring sessions ! It is great for word patterns and fluency reading! I recommend it for teachers who use weekly poetry in the classroom!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for.
I expected a book of poems that helped to teach the top 35 word families would have a vocabulary that was more in line with K-2 readers. Many of these poems will not be within the reading ability of children who are learning word families. I was promised many examples of the word families in each poem. I expected a book of poems that helped to teach the top 35 word families would have a vocabulary that was more in line with K-2 readers. Many of these poems will not be within the reading ability of children who are learning word families. I was promised many examples of the word families in each poem. Many of them only have a few family words, certainly not enough to help emergent readers gain any practice, especially with the higher vocabulary used through out the rest of the poem. Some of the poems are delightful, but on the whole, I was dissapointed with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars not dumbed down, May 30, 2007

See the excerpts at Amazon to help you make your own decision. The cover has samples of poems. One of the excerpts gives some of the instructions for using the book. This is a creative and entertaining way to teach some phonics. It doesn't teach all of the word families but it does a great job with the ones it does teach. The delightful poems also help with memory skills because the poems are easy to remember. This gives a point of reference. On my website, there is a lot about memory skills for young children.

This was a Christmas gift for my daughter-in-law who is a 1st grade teacher. She had it on her wish list. She was very excited to receive this book so I believe that this would be a good book for a teacher or the parent of an elementary age child.
