Dr. Hugh Everett III, Ph.D., was what Scientific American magazine calls "one of the most important scientists of the 20th century." A quantum physicist who authored The Many Worlds Theory, Everett inspired countless science fiction books, movies and Star Trek episodes with the concept of parallel universes. As a young teenager he exchanged letters with Albert Einstein, debating ... Read more in Amazon's Eels Store

4.0 out of 5 stars A review of Eels' "Wonderful, Glorious" deluxe edition February 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD
In just under a year, from June 2009 to May 2010, Eels released three albums (Hombre Lobo, End Times and Tomorrow Morning). Despite the sheer volume of music (those last two had a handful of bonus tracks as well), I honestly believe that there was one really amazing Eels album there.
Then, they toured, then, they disappeared.
At the end of October 2012, the Eels website dropped a bomb: a brand new Eels album would arrive in just over three months.
Eels would return.
It would be wonderful.
It would be glorious.
I was worried that, with a title like that, E (Mark Oliver Everett III, the man behind Eels) had set himself up for mockery.
I thought, "What if it was neither wonderful nor glorious?! What then?!"
As it turns out, I am happy to report that I had nothing to worry about.
Because this album is awesome.

The album opens with "Bombs Away", a strident declaration from E that he is tired of not being heard; he's going to "shake" and "rattle the house" and also stop "being a mouse". He's letting the bombs fall and blowing open the doors. While the lyrics (punctuated by his defiant, carefree howls) speak of exploding from the gate and damning the consequences, the music seems somewhat less enthusiastic. Is it weird to say that I would have liked more BMPs? There's a line, "Nobody listens to a whispering fool / Are you listening? I didn't think so", that is repeated and changed to reflect E's state of mind. It goes from a question, to a whispered statement ("You're not listening, I didn't think so") to the final, declarative "Are you listening? I know that you are", only the music, while it does build, slightly, throughout the song, doesn't seem to match that abandon and confident. Hm, I feel as if I'm overexplaining this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Under-Appreciated Band of All Time February 6, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
E and the Eels have been my absolute favorite band/singer-songwriter ever since Beautiful Freak (my introduction to the Eels). I love that every album, every song is kind of a surprise. You never quite know what you're going to get with the Eels--a rocking foot-stomper or a poignant ballad or something that seems to defy all logic and wedge itself firmly between the two. Every album seems incredibly unique but at the same time every song is undeniably the Eels.

I think E is a fascinating talent. His music is not only enjoyable, but thought provoking. I think of many of his songs as meditations. I mean, I'm no music critic or anything, just an average guy, but while the lyrics may not always be poetry, the emotion conveyed by the music combined with the lyrics take it from "It's a song about smelling flowers (*yawn*)" to "How do we live our lives every day and not take time to smell the [Peach Blossoms]". There may be layered meanings here which just make the songs more fun to meditate on. Deeper meaning or not, I do think one of E's many talents is pointing out the simple joys in life whether it's peach blossoms or birds. ("I like birds" was responsible for making me a bird watcher, which my wife is fond of teasing me about.)

Anyway, I just want to say for the record that I think it's a crying shame that when I tell people my absolute, #1 favorite band of all time is the Eels, they almost invariably reply, "Who?"

I would love to see them in concert someday, but I know there's not much chance of them coming anywhere near Wichita, Kansas.

Sorry for rambling. In summary: Another awesome album by the Eels. They are Wonderful, Glorious.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st time buyer - completely unbiased opinion February 9, 2013
By S & J
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I had never heard of Eel or heard Eel anywhere. That said, I'll be 62 soon and this album is a zig or zag for me to buy. And no, I wasn't doing any buying for children/grands. I was completely overwhelmed by the honesty and humility present in the lyrics. Coming from the days of Led Z. through today, very few albums come to mind that move you like this does. B. Geldof, David B., come to mind. Sometimes I need to squeeze by some of the music but keep coming back to his title song: Wonderful, Glorious and his heartfelt proclamation of what life can be when you have let your life become it. Do the next right thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very appropriate title February 14, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
I have log been a fan of E and every album project he has done. From his solo records to the actual band being a sort of solo project as well, he is defined as the sound of the band and has handled every aspect of the recording and songwriting from the beginning.
With this project, for the first time, the entire album is written ad performed fully as a band, and it shows.
I can say that if you enjoy his voice and style, you won't be disappointed, but there is a freshness present that you rarely get from an artist at this stage of his career. It seems he has found new life in this true "full-band" Style project, and I hope this keeps him writing and recording for yeas to come.
A great record that I would especially recommend for those that enjoy his "happier" work, such as his known movie soundtrack hits and the like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poppies, Poppies February 10, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I am a die-hard eels fan, and I was one from the moment I saw the video 'Novocaine For the Soul'. I immediately bought the CD and just about wore it out. I soaked up every subsequent release in the same alternative haze. I imagine it was akin to a century earlier when Opium Dens were the rage in the larger cities. Novocaine for the Soul, Poppies for the ears.

That ended with 'End Time' and 'Tomorrow Morning'. They did not click with me right away. After a few listens, I was able to appreciate them and acknowledge their place. What also made them important is that Mark Everett writes lyrics that I usually identify with, and sometimes, very deeply.

When I listen to the earlier releases, I get that eels BUZZ that I am so addicted to. Always as fresh and invigorating as the first time, they do not disappoint. I have no favorites on these earlier albums because there just isn't a lame track in any of them. Every song that makes up 'Beautiful Freak' is a classic. There is no filler. 'Rags to Rags' and 'Your Lucky Day in Hell' hold their own beside any of the better-known cuts, for example. Even the four-song bonus disc that came with 'Soul Jacker' sounds nothing like extras, outtakes or b-sides.

'Wonderful, Glorious' clicks, indeed and returns me back to the always-welcomed Ear-Poppy Utopian daze. A triumph indeed, no doubt. Will E & friends get the recognition deserved with this supreme release? No. How can it compete with the unyielding, auto-tuned, watered-down, HighNRG-disco-rock amalgamation abomination that tops the charts each week?

Everyone should at least know them. On The Ropes is one of the best "don't give in" songs ever. Diverse and interesting. A solid buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars keep rockin E
Another glimpse into the twisted mind of E. He must go to some dark place when he writes these songs. That's why we're fans though. We live in the darkness
