5.0 out of 5 stars Isaac Hayes at his best, June 29, 2008
This review is from: Wonderful (Audio CD)
Here you'll find a few of his songs that never found their way onto an album. Sure they were released on 45s, except for the first two, which were apart of the Wattstax film, but they never had a proper home until now. Aside from the sound quality, which seems to whisper "remaster me please" the songs are amazing. Ain't No Sunshine is not stretched to 17 1/2 minutes, but flows naturally for the entire length of the song as only Isaac himself could deliver. Baby I'm-a Want You is a shorter piece but done in the same way...a performance only Isaac can deliver. Other tracks are up to the quality of the rest of his catalog. Slightly odd that they'd finish it off with two Christmas songs, but they hold their own. Interesting cover, I'll give him credit though, any other artist/any other cover it would look rediculous. Only he has the the sex appeal to pull it off.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good compilation of tracks which did not originally appear on any of his Stax solo LPs., May 23, 2008

Not one of the nine tracks featured on this CD was included on any of Isaac Hayes' original Stax LPs--it's great, however, to have them all on one CD now. His 17-minute version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" was definitely a major highlight of the "Wattstax" concert movie (and its soundtrack) and it remains one of his finest and rawest Blues performances. The two duets with his songwriting partner David Porter ("Ain't That Loving You [For More Reasons Than One]" and "Baby I'm-A Want You") were given a Sam and Dave-like treatment while the rare Christmas tunes ("Winter Snow" and "The Mistletoe and Me") originally appeared on a various artists Stax Christmas album. A true collector's item from the "Black Moses" of Soul.
