This review is from: The Wonderful Life of Saint Sergius of Radonezh (Hardcover)
This is a lovely, lovely story that is a true treasure on our bookshelf. First of all, the illustrations are glorious and bright and interesting. It can be difficult to illustrate a quality children's book because there is always the danger of it being too cartoony, or saccharine. But the pictures in this book really do the story justice, giving a somewhat "icon-like" style to a story of an eastern saint.
The story itself is a gem. I love how on the cover it says: "told by Alvin Alexsi Currier"... as if he's simply been entrusted with passing on the tale; he is not the originator. But the beautiful thing is that it is written in a form of prose that reads like an epic ballad. The age range says 4-11 but be forewarned that those on the younger end might get bored with the length of the story (unless they've been raised on good books from the get-go). My 6 year old is fascinated with it. My 4 year old will sit through it, but only because the pictures are lovely and I've been reading to him since Day 1. I don't think he necessarily "gets" the story. I'm always on the lookout for books that reinforce our morals and Catholic faith (see my listmania) so I was delighted to find this book and I recommend it without hesitation! Enjoy! |
