Great for adopted children too!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
This is a great book! We have so many books in our home that I hadn't even realized how great this book is. My mom had gotten it and I had totally forgotten about it until my 6 year old grabbed it for a car trip. There's a special section at the end talking about adoption and about how Jesus was adopted by Joseph. It discusses the virgin birth very well which, let's face it,can be a little tricky for any parent. The 2 different texts-large print for ages 3-8 and the smaller print for 9-14-is a great idea.

Wonderful for a start on the "birds and bees",
This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book, with a Christian perspective on explaining sex to kids. It has 2 sets of text, one for younger kids and a slightly more advanced set for older kids. It touches on several areas including conception, pregnancy and adoption. It is definitely for the Christian family as it discusses Adam and Eve and Christ's birth among other things such as Christian morality. A wonderful starting point for discussion with your kids. My 2 girls (5 and 3) loved it when their younger brother came along.

The Best Book on How Babies Are Made... EVER!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
When I was a kid my parents bought a few books about the birds/bees that were rather graphic (in my opinion) and left me thinking that in order for a child to be conceived the couple had to be "in love". So when I went shopping for a book to read to my children I read each one with a rather critical eye for the *whole* truth about how babies are conceived. This book covers conception and more in a way that is honest but also age appropriate. My 8 year old daughter has asked some interesting moral questions (related to sex) and this book answers them in a way that I feel is sensitive as well as Biblically sound.

A wonderful way to make Sex-Ed, *No Big Deal* !!,
This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book for any parent who wants to make Sex-Ed no big deal! I grew up with this book... and it is ***Awesome***!! The illustrations are gorgeous, but more importantly I think it gives enough information without either grossing the child(ren) out... or leaving them wondering. It's from a Christian perspective and it is written in two parts. The main part is in the larger print and is geared for the younger age level, and the smaller print is for the older ones, and goes into a little more detail. The older text it talks about saving intercourse for the person you're married to. The whole subject is framed in the context of creation, creating families and creating babies. It also has a section on adoption and the fact that Joseph adopted Jesus. Momma started reading us the larger print when we were about three or so, and the larger when we got closer to 10-12 years old. When we were little, she treated it like any other bed-time story.... she kept it up on our shelf, and pulled it down every so often to read it to us before bed. Because she kept it such a casual thing... sex was never was a big deal! I definitely plan on purchasing this book, and using it with my future family!!!

Nicely laid out. I was having trouble getting thru "the talk" with my kids this made it a little easier. Good explanations. I was still a little embarrassed to read it.Presents the act of love making as a gift from God that should be shared within the boundaries of marriage.

The Wonderful Way Babies Are Made,
This review is from: The Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made (Hardcover)
This book is ideal for both young children as well as pre-teens. If you are looking for a christian oriented explanation of reproduction and birth this is it.This explains the true way God intended life to be! The book is written with the print in 2 different sizes, one being appropriate for the younger set, so the parents would have to read the book to them. It's a great book.

Terrific for Teaching the Value of Abstinence, Even for Special Needs Children,

This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
A friend highly recommended this book years ago after she bought it for her own daughter when she realized it was time for "the talk." What appealed to me was that it was not only by a Christian author (in fact I believe he's a minister), but my friend said it approached the subjects of sex and abstinence in a way that treated both as sacred but without shame.
She was absolutely right. When I got a copy for my daughter, I was pleasantly surprised that the author knew how to tell the "dirty details" without being neither dirty nor prude. He managed to encompass a wide age range in doing so by having one version of the book for the littler kids in large text, as well as more detailed, more mature explanations for older children on the opposite pages. I also liked that he did not discuss abstinence from a finger-wagging "You'd better do this or God's gonna get you" approach. Rather, he explained at just the right level how sexual intimacy is a wonderful gift from God meant as the ultimate way for a married couple to express their deep love, commitment, and affection for one another... and that sometimes it leads to an equally wonderful gift: A new life with whom devoted parents can share their love. The illustrations included are also fantastic. They are colorful, the artistry is gorgeous, and they depict "stickier" subjects such as intimacy and conception in a manner that is very respectful and appropriate. What I also appreciated was the fact that my daughter, who is developmentally delayed, immediately grasped how the author presented the material, to where it made a lasting and positive impression on her. I believe if Christenson had approached things any differently it would have been a different story. I even ended up getting a copy for my ex-husband so if she wanted to ask him questions, he would have a guide to navigate this subject confidently. Therefore I also recommend The Wonderful Way Babies Are Made to any parent who is struggling with how to introduce discussions about sex with their own special needs children. Today my daughter is an adult and she still believes strongly in abstinence. I have Larry Christenson to thank for helping me lay down the foundation for her values regarding sex and opening the lines of discussion that took place in the years that followed. You can bet that when the time comes to go over the "birds and bees" with my young son who is also special needs, I will be doing so with this same book.

I bought this book to help us explain the birds and the bees to our 7 year old daughter. I thought this book was a little too detailed for her age. She can read, so I can't just read her the more general big print- she would read the small detailed print as well, which goes into detail. I think it is too much information for her at her age and stage and would've liked the book to be slightly more general. I had to store the book away for maybe next year.

This book is AMAZING!
I read it to my then 8 year old daughter who'd been asking questions about babies. The author explains sexuality in the context of how it fits in with how God made the world and the order of things. He also writes in two different levels: the big, bold writing that you can read aloud to younger children; and smaller, more detailed writing for the more mature child. So the parent can control how much information their child gets and the right age. The author takes the topic from how God made the world, through how each living thing also has the ability to make its own kind, including humans, to covering sex within marriage only, to adoption and how even Jesus was adopted by Joseph. It beautifully explains the subject in a way that teaches that sex is not just sex, it's a part of a bigger picture. This book helped me explain the topic in a way that I NEVER would have been able to on my own. I hope you buy this book and benefit from it like we did.

An Excellent Supplement for Parent-Child Discussion of Sex,
By Shanna A. Gonzalez "eyelevelbooks.com" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made, The (Hardcover)
Astonishingly, given the obsession our culture has for sex, many books on the topic (both Christian and secular) somehow make it boring and uncomfortable. This book, beautifully written and pleasingly illustrated, is neither. The author does a very nice job placing sex within a larger context by describing how God created the universe and the world, and how He allows living beings to participate in that creative work through procreation. The institution of marriage is described as the appropriate place for sex, and the mechanics of sex and procreation are described accurately and respectfully. Wonderfully, at the end of the book the author notes that babies also come into families through adoption, and that Jesus Himself was adopted by Joseph and subsequently listed in Joseph's family tree.
The book is targeted for readers between the ages of 3 and 14, and strikes a balance between too much and too little information by giving simple lyrical text in large print for young listeners, and additional details in small text to be read by older children. Unlike many other books on this topic, the illustrations are quite modest, with one image of partial nudity (Adam and Eve seen from behind, viewed from the waist up) and one image of a married couple embracing beneath a modestly-draped blanket. There is absolutely no substitute for an ongoing conversation between loving parents and children about sex and marriage. This book makes a very nice supplement (and possibly a jump-start) to that conversation. |
