Book Description

September 1, 1999 5 and upK and up
When a cyclone whisked Dorothy far from the gray prairies of Kansas to the colorful Land of Oz, it not only set a courageous and determined little girl on a series of unforgettable adventures—it blew fresh air into children’s literature. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is what the author called "a modern fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartache and nightmares left out." It's now more than a hundred years since Dorothy and her endearing companions—her mischievous dog Toto, the brainless but practical-minded Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the kindly Tin Woodsman who longs for a heart—first marched along the yellow brick road into storybook history. In this edition, Michael Foreman's bright, whimsical watercolors of Dorothy and her friends capture the enchanting essence of L. Frank Baum's "wondertale."

Review

"- 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares left out.' L. Frank Baum, Chicago, April 1900

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book, so-so illustrations, October 30, 2000
This book is 100 years old, but as Angela Lansbury (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, MURDER SHE WROTE, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS, THE WIZARD OF OZ: 50 YEARS OF MAGIC, etc) once said "you can hear the story and a million times isn't enough." This timeless tale is one you will enjoy indefinatly! This one has NEW illustrations which are not as good as John R. Neil's or Charles Santore's but are better than most. I recommend this book and I think you will enjoy it immensely!

4.0 out of 5 stars Adorably Suited for Younger Children, June 9, 2005
By
Sam A. Milazzo (Sydney, N.S.W Australia) - See all my reviews
As soon as I saw this book, I knew a certain friend's little girl would love this book. The pictures are made from pencils, crayons and paint and are beautiful, even the well-known used pictures. Even though Dorothy's blonde hair and stripped stockings might make her look a bit liek Alice and the Lion looks old and skinny/skwauny, and many of the pictures closley follow Denslow's orginal design (cyclone, silvers hoes with ribbons, melting witch, etc.), the children will love this book, because the full original story is here. The Wicked witch has a new skin colour and looks a tiny bit like a vampire, the Winged Monkeys have colourful/parrot-like wings, Scarecrow's shirt is brown, Glinda is beautiful (even if we don't see all her hair) and when Dorothy and Toto return to Kansas, there is a lovely picture of the new farm.
I'm sure that any child will love this ediion, even if not all the chapters have a picture.
