Editorial Reviews

Disc one of this 2CD set presents the premiere release of the complete score to The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, newly mixed and mastered from the original seven-channel Cinerama masters. Disc two has three sections: First is the David Rose "cover" version of the Brothers Grimm soundtrack released by MGM Records at the time of the film, featuring Rose's versions of Merrill's themes on side one, and six contemporary movie themes on side two. In the middle of disc two is a program of bonus tracks from the original soundtrack sessions to Brothers Grimm. Finally, concluding disc two is Leigh Harline's charming, never-before-released romantic comedy score to the 1961 M-G-M film, The Honeymoon Machine, starring Steve McQueen, with an upbeat title song, "Love Is Crazy" (lyrics by Jack Brooks).

This may very well be one of the best soundtrack CDs ever created.

The Brothers Grimm tracks were mastered from the original seven-channel Cinerama masters, and the results are breath-taking. The recordings are nearly 50 years old, but because Cinerama was decades ahead of its time, the music is lush, sweeping, alive, rich, and fanciful.

There are alternate takes, all fascinating. And the booklet inside is an amazingly beautiful work of art. Even the pictures on the discs are gorgeous.

There is a second disc of related (and unrelated) music by David Rose and his orchestra, as well as the soundtrack to The Honeymoon Machine.

This is a limited edition set: there are only 2000 copies, so get it while you can. It is well worth the price, and I can almost guarantee that everyone, young and old, will like it.

GOOD JOB, Film Score Monthly! Now if you could find a studio that would release the movie on DVD, it would be the icing on the cake.

Bluesy200 pretty much lays out all of the basics and facts in that review, about this CD.

I can only add that this is yet another classic fantasy film score, like "7 Faces of
Dr. Lao," and "Jack the Giant Killer," that has been much hoped for and eagerly
anticipated, for decades, for a release of the ENTIRE score! The previous decade seems
to be the "magic" one for "rare" movie scores to finally become available! A huge "THANK YOU," to whomever
was responsible for that....FILM SCORE MONTHLY seems to be one of the companies responsible for this
wonderful miracle! It's such a crime that the world has been deprived of all this great stuff
for TOO long a period of time! All of us fans, whom have been waiting for so long, are ecstatic
with these new cd releases! The quality of the sound, the volume of music and restorations have been
outstanding...and SO ENTERTAINING! I personally, sincerely hope that the trend continues!

In any case, this CD contains the finest quality music that even an outsider of the genre would enjoy
listening to! Have a listen and hear for yourselves!

Bluesy200 says that a new release of the film on dvd would be the "icing on the cake"....but,
respectfully, this CD IS the icing...and NEEDS THE CAKE! :-)

This score is a delight in every way, and this release gets the five star treatment in every respect from the sound engineering to the booklet to the archival work invested in it.
I only hope the film itself will get the same treatment that HOW THE WEST WAS WON, (the other Cinerama film)did with a full restoration and Blu-Ray release.

This CD is a minor miracle for anyone who likes Leigh Harline's delightful melodies and especially the music he composed for the "Brothers Grimm." (Not "Grimm" the TV series) This film is one of two Hollywood-made movies which were filmed in the spectacular Cinerama process, the other one being "How the West Was Won" which is now on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, it's my understanding, that the original camera negatives for "Brothers" were destroyed in a fire at MGM several years ago and there is actually only one surviving Cinerama print. "Brothers" was released on Laserdisc from a composite 35mm print but the picture quality wasn't the greatest. It's too bad that this title on CD is apparently out of print. I had to pay over $40.00 from a seller who was in Japan, but it was a brand, new unopened CD. And the sound quality was amazing, since the transfer was from the original 7-track Cinerama magnetic 35mm recordings. Outstanding and memorable in every way!
