One of the best guitarists in the world today. Period.I still have my vinyl copy. I just bought this CD here. I bought the album the day it came out back in 1983? The thing with this album is that it is a three piece powerhouse. Andy Newmark on Drums, Kevin McCormick on Bass, Nils on Guitars/Vocals. Yeah an overdub here or there but, really a natural rawness for the time which it's recorded. Nils' guitar playing is some of my favorite from his entire recorded history. Not long after this he became an E Streeter. Where he touched the Springsteen sound LIVE with a style and class that only Nils could bring to the table. The perfect foil for that band. Across the Tracks is an unrealised or at least underpromoted hit single. This is Nils Lofgren in full maturity. It is my favorite Nils studio album after Cry Tough. It is a great, great, great addition to any collection.

Another great CD from Nils. I bought the LP when it came out but haven't gotten out the turntable in a long time. Wish we could get the all the other classic Nils albums on CD.

Wonderful!,

An absolute Nils Lofgren classic. If you are not a fan of Nils, you should be! A way unappreciated genius, this album is one of his fun ones. Worth it for "Across the Tracks", "Lonesome Ranger" and" It's All Over Now" alone. The title track is a great version with a reggae beat -- I'd previously only known the live version on Acoustic Live. Good stuff all around.

Nils guitar work is amazing on this. The solos on Daddy Dream and Deadline scream! The classic Nils album.

Fun last "solo outing" but no match for his earlier solo work,

Nils last "solo" recording before he took the Springstein dollar in the E Street Band and while the man waxes lyrical on the sleeve notes about how much he enjoyed it all, when compared with his earlier solo efforts (the first two "Nils Lofgern" and "Cry Tough" especially) it is sadly not quite that outstanding. The issue one suspects is that while he had the able hands of David Briggs or Al Kooper at the production controls on those prior efforts, this recording was produced by the main performing trio of Nils, drummer Andy Newmark and bassist Kevin McCormick and enthusiasm rather than a tuned outside ear at the controls is the culprit. While a set of mainly Nils composed songs and guest names appear but only on backup vocals, the overall sound on several tracks suffers from the drum heavy production values that dominated early 1980s recordings, which in turn leads to the loss of subtlety which has always served Nils well especialy on vocals and guitar soloing (the title track being one of the few exceptions). Enjoyable but not his best.

The wonders of Wonderland,

Nils Lofgren's (1983's) "Wonderland" is his 6th studio album, recorded in Bermuda. A great follow up to his lost classic "Night Fades Away"#99 in 1981. This album starts off with one of my favorite rock tunes "Across The Tracks", this should of been a big hit! He does a good take on the Bobby Womack number "It's All Over Now", some good fret work here! The excellent "I Wait For You", another blistering track. The funky "Daddy Dream", followed by the title track a great song, with jamaican rhythms. "Room Without Love", is a very controlled rock song. "Just a room without you, is a room without love". The rockin' "Confident Girl". Carly Simon sings with Nils on "Lonesome Ranger". The feel of the islands with "Everybody Wants", good guitar here. Finishes it off with the upbeat "Deadline". Nice release by American Beat Records. Great sound! Wish they would release "Night Fades Away", it was a great album. Nils would join the E-Street Band after this release. I love a few of Nils other recordings: "Cry Tough" (1976) ***** Night Fades Away (1981) ***** "Flip" (1985) ****1/2 and "Crooked Line" (1992) ****.

I've loved this album for years and was happy to see it available on CD.Upon the first play the sound quality immediately struck me as very shallow and hollow, I was quite disappointed. I'll just record the LP to CD myself, it will sound better. |
