Wonder's Champion is the best!,
By Kendall Graham (MOntgomery, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wonder's Champion (Thoroughbred Series #21) (Paperback)
This book is so awesome! Whitebrook has been wanting a triple Crown winner for, like, so long! Wonder won the Derby and the Belmont, and Pride won the Derby and Preakness, but they have never bred and trained a Triple Crown Winner. Until Wonder's Champion. Cindy helps Champion to over come his problems with other horses, and it pays off! after battling through temperment problems and a hoof injury, Champion shows the world that he truly is his name. U have to read this book!

It just doesn't work,

How come when Karen Bentley finally writes a book with a horse running in the Triple Crown the horse wins all three races???? Besides, in the previous books the author can't even get the basic facts right. She calls Wonder's Pride, Townsend Pride, but Townsend Pride was Wonder's sire. Then, Ashleigh keeps saying that Brad had Wonder whipped so that she wouldn't run in her early training. It was actually Wonder's rider,Jocko, who was riding how her early trainer, Jim Jennings, wanted him to ride. Also, when they were having to find a jockey for Glory and later on Honor, why didn't they just ask Jilly? What's up with this missing character thing? Whatever happened to Precocious, Sierra, Fleeting Moment, Jilly, the Townsends, and the others. See what I mean? This series has really gone downhill. -M.D.

Save the Thoroughbred Series!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wonder's Champion (Thoroughbred Series #21) (Paperback)
The Cindy and second generation eventing portions of the series were dark days for Thoroughbred. The plots have since switched back to racing and the newest few books have been exceptional. Just as we thought there was hope for the Thoroughbred series to be restored to its former glory Harper Collins has decided to end the series abruptly after #72. With such a dedicated following and online fan base with members from all over the world, this is a classic and beloved series that has inspired many people and provided horse fans with vicarious thrills and adventure. Ashleigh saved Wonder, now it's up to you to help save Thoroughbred. [...]

I am a tiny bit confused. In some books, the authors say that Champion has a brown, almost black mane and is a dark chestnut, but on the cover, he is a bright chestnut with a bright chestnut mane! Please get the colors straight! Also, I think Cindy is a rotten brat. I do not think she deserves a horse like Champion. She deserves a maiden claimer, not a triple crown champion!

The Fantasy world of Thoroughbred,
This review is from: Wonder's Champion (Thoroughbred) (School & Library Binding)
First off, this book just wasn't planned well. They tried to slide six months into 199 pages and that just didn't work well. By the time we were actually in the Triple Crown the whole thing was completed within three chapters. Suspenseful? Not really. The whole thing was so downplayed. Back with Pride raced it was actually exciting. A second thing, this book just doesn't know what's going on. Post position draws for any race are not run like that in reality. For anyone who actually knows what happens in the racing industry, most of what is written in this book shows how much Bentley knows about racing. It shows that she didn't even bother to actually watch a real race or read a simple racing publication to tell her what races are what and when they are run.

This book is my absolute favorite of this series. It is very intense. It is very exciting when Champion gets the opprotunity to go to the Triple Crown. Then he gets a minor injury... I'll let you find out the rest by reading this book yourself. If you love horses and like books this the book for YOU!!!

God, not another one,

I don't think that people know how hard it is for a horse to win all of his/her races. Plus the fact that it has never been done. There has never been a record where a horse has won all of it's races. Even Man O' War couldn't do it and he's the greatest horse of all time besides Secretariat. Winning the Triple Crown is extremely rare. Most of the time a different horse wins at each race. Most of the time there is never an "almost". Just because Real Quiet won the first two legs doesn't guarantee him a first place spot in the Belmont. Victory Gallop proved that. The plot lines in these books suggest that it is abnormally easy to win one of these races. They seem to forget that there are always other stars in other farms. Not just Whitebrook has all the luck, though it may seem like they do. And in this little fantasy world they do. In the real world we have something that is called competition. I don't like to think about Cindy riding in the Dubai and winning. That's ridiculous. You have to have experience to ride in a race like that. You just don't ride in a few ungraded races and then fly around the world and ride in a very major and very competitive race and win. Nevermind riding the Triple Crown winner. It's just unreal and stupid. Racing is a serious sport where it takes a lot of practice and hard work to win a horse race. In these books a ten year old can come from no horse background and train a racer six months after she learned to ride. That is so frightening. I shudder to think what that would do to the racing industry.

I don't think I could enjoy this book if I tried. I read these but now I don't and I think Cindy has a lot to do with that. Yah, it's focused on racing and that's great and all. But I'm sick of all of these wonder horses running around. What are they doing? Cloning Secretariat? It's great and unplifting to read about winners. The authors just took a step to far. I'm sick of it. Wonder's Champion goes from unruly colt to Triple Crown victor and amazing Dubai Cup winner. Yadda Yadda. Honor Bright is the same. Glory was the same. Storm, the same. Could we have a different plot line here?! And I don't mean something so sudden and shocking as flipping to jumping/eventing. That's a big surprise. Can't a horse just LOSE? I don't see what's so wrong about it. Why must Glory win by thirty-one lengths every time he runs? Why does Wonder's Champion win the triple crown, something that isn't really realistic, most of the time there's a different horse that wins! each race in the triple crown. Real Quiet lost in the Belmont to Victory Gallop by a nose. It would've been wonderful to read that Wonder's Champion lost by a nose by some mystery horse or something. Set up a really big challenger. A horse that the Whitebrook horses can't defeat so easily. Create a new farm that is a rival to Whitebrook. Create good race horses that come from the new farm. Have the Whitebrook horses really scramble to beat them, to catch up with them. Those are just a few ideas that could help the series from being so happy go lucky. I wish somebody would listen to a reader for a minute and not a critic. Readers are the best critics of all. So to the buyer, don't bother to read this piece of garbage.
