Book Description

2009
This coffee-table book takes readers on a voyage beneath the ocean to discover marine life from Santa Barbara to San Diego and offshore to all eight of the Channel Islands. It highlights the ecological hot spots that dot Southern California's coastline-places like La Jolla Cove, Point Dume and Farnsworth Banks, where sea life thrives and divers, surfers, boaters, birders, and tidepoolers are treated to a glimpse of nature at its best. Created by award-winning marine photographer Marc Shargel, the book is a window onto the diverse ocean life of Southern California. Just beyond soaring bluffs and sun-drenched beaches lies a rainbow of color and a diversity of forms, an array of life so different from what we find on land that it seems like another world. Wonders of the Sea tells the story of the region's heyday, when anglers caught tuna by the truckload and people still believed that the sea's bounty was limitless. The book also describes and illustrates half a dozen different marine habitats found in Southern California, and the unique collection of animals and plants found in each. Ecology, marine biology, natural history interwoven with human history all emerge from the pages of Wonders of the Sea, illuminated by brilliant photography. The pictures come to life in stories told by divers, educators, scientists, surfers and businesspeople. Their voices, from all over Southern California, describe the intimate relationship between local residents and their ocean. The value of Wonders of the Sea Volume Two: Marine Jewels of Southern California's Coast and Islands, transcends the beautiful images and compelling tales found on its pages. Extensive reference notes, provide a wealth of information about sea life and habitats. A companion website offers links to cited sources, and information about conservation efforts underway to protect Southern California's ocean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative book!, October 29, 2009

This review is from: Wonders of the Sea Volume Two: Marine Jewels of Southern California's Coast and Islands (Wonders of the Sea, Volume 2) (Hardcover)
The first time I thumbed through this book, I was completely blown away by the images. I'm not a diver, so I've only seen the sorts of creatures pictured here in aquariums, and it amazes me to think all of these strange and beautiful creatures live in the waters right off California's coast. Such a different world underwater, and yet most of us know very little about it!

I was even more impressed when I took the time to read the text of Wonders of the Sea, because it's super informative. It highlights the differences between San Diego and Santa Monica Bay, from habitat types to critters to the recreational opportunities common at popular beaches and reefs.

Possibly my favorite part of this book, though, is the history lesson its "looking back" sections provide. It's wild to see fishermen in three piece suits hoisted tuna the size of small whales. Hard to believe that fish were so much bigger just a few decades ago, but that really just goes to show what our booming population, and advances in fishing technology, have done to the ocean. Wonders of the Sea ends with a hopeful, inspiring note: there's a lot we can do to ensure these undersea treasures are still around for our kids, starting with supporting ocean conservation efforts like the Marine Life Protection Act.

Highly recommend this book--a great gift for kids, especially!
