Both approaches work well.)

This cocoa tastes no better than cheaper brands I've tried, and it is more expensive other brands that taste better.

1) This product is not at all decaffeinated. The "99.7% caffeine free" on the label refers to the percentage of stuff in the container that is not caffeine, rather than a portion of caffeine that has been removed from the cocoa. It is no more meaningful than it would be to write "100% nightshade free" on the container. See the comment thread under Matt's review for more information. 2-star penalty for misleading advertising.

2) This cocoa tastes no better than cheaper brands I've tried, and it is more expensive other brands that taste better. 3 stars for taste.

3) The fat-free aspect is not very significant, at least not to me. Cocoa powder is roughly 20% fat, but you only need a small amount of cocoa powder to make hot chocolate.

4) The metal containers, while nice looking, do not function well. It is difficult to open them without spilling some cocoa.

I have been using this brand of cocoa for over 10 years and love it but I can't order 12 cans at a time! If you make it available as single cans or even 3 or 4 I would buy, but not a dozen!

This may or may not be a tasty cocoa powder, but is not decaffeinated and it is not free of caffeine. The product is simply cocoa powder, the same thing you get if you buy Hershey's or any other brand of unsweetened cocoa. The label states that the powder is "99.7% caffeine free." This is true because -- you guessed it -- cocoa powder naturally consists of 0.3% caffeine. This is not comparable to statements that (for instance) decaffeinated coffee is 97% caffeine free, which means that 97% of the original caffeine content has been removed.

If you make a cup of hot chocolate from this powder, using one tablespoon per 8 ounces of milk, the caffeine content will be reasonably low -- approximately 15 milligrams -- but perceptible to someone who is very sensitive to caffeine. If you make what we might call the Angelina's cocoa recipe (about 80 grams of cocoa), you will have 240 milligrams of caffeine, about the equivalent of a "tall" Starbucks coffee. Do not buy this powder (as I unfortunately did) thinking that you can make your favorite brownies, truffles, or even hot chocolate with any less caffeine than those recipes would have if you made them from another standard unsweetened cocoa powder.

only difference from Hershey's 100% cocoa with less sodium; more convenient to pick up at grocery store for 1/3 price

Delicious! I like that it's not sweet, which gives me control over how sweet I want my hot cocoa, and what kind of sweetener I want to use.

Initially, I used it as a chocolate powder to sprinkle on tiramisu and lattes. It is an extremely light/fine powder, so it's great for a light dusting of chocolate over desserts or drinks. In fact, the powder is so light that the lid warns you to open the can slowly so that you don't end up with a puff of chocolate powder billowing into your face and lungs (which you probably will the first time you open your first can).

Instead of a heavy hot chocolate drink, I use 1 tablespoon (about 1/2 the recommended serving) and mix it into latte-style steamed milk, as a nighttime alternative to a decaf latte. (I actually use a sugar-free, vanilla flavored brand of low fat coconut milk instead of regular milk, and I don't add a sweetener; but I have a friend who uses regular milk and her own sweetener. Both approaches work well.)

The can comes sealed like a (very large) tuna or soup can, which preserves the cocoa in an air-tight way. Once you pull the tab and remove the metallic top, you use the supplied plastic lid to re-seal it. (It's the next time you pull off that plastic lid too fast that you risk getting the puff of cocoa-flavored smoke in your face!) Over time, the moisture in the air may cause a little clumping and less "puffing", but the powder still remains very fine.
