Review

"Margaret Feinberg is a modern-day David. With eyes on the heavens, His Word in hand, and all her heart turned towards His, she tells the wonders of His love in ways you've never known. Who in the world doesn't need joy like this?"
--ANN VOSKAMP, New York Times Best Selling Author of One Thousand Gifts

"Wonderstruck is a game-changing book. Feinberg's brilliant writing captures you as she points to the God who has captured her."
--JUD WILHITE, Senior pastor of Central Christian Church, Las Vegas, Nevada

"Feinberg turns exegesis into an art, delivering findings that invite the audience to touch, taste, smell, and see God's handiwork throughout the Scriptures and in their own lives."
--ED STETZER, President, LifeWay Research

"[Feinberg] succeeds in keeping the reader engaged, entertained, and edified . . . [She] raises questions that linger in the mind after the book is closed."
--PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"We dangerously underestimate the power of wonder. . . Margaret recenters wonder at the heart of our relationship with God, with seismic results. This book shook my soul awake and made it impossible for me to continue following a God of my own design. Her work is captivating, staggeringly honest and refreshingly deep, stirring my mind, heart, sense, and soul to consider God in ways that are reshaping me."
--NANCY ORTBERG, Author of Looking for God

"Wonderstruck invites you to open your eyes to the delights, joys, and gifts of God all around. You can't read this book and remain the same--it will change you so you see yourself, others, God, and the world around you in a more beautiful, life-giving way."
--BOB GOFF, Author of Love Does

Her books and Bible studies have sold over 600,000 copies and received critical acclaim and extensive national media coverage from CNN, the Associated Press, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and many others.

She was recently named one of the 30 Voices who will help lead the church in the next decade by Charisma magazine and one of the '40 Under 40' who will shape Christian publishing by Christian Retailing magazine. Margaret currently lives in Morrison, Colorado, with her husband, Leif and their superpup, Hershey.

Now that you've read the official bio, here's the kick off your shoes and drink iced tea on the back porch version:

Margaret spends most mornings with her good friends Coffee and God. Without Coffee, mornings would be difficult. Without God, life would be impossible.

After a caffeine and God infusion, you'll often find Margaret (puppy-in-tow) adventuring outdoors--she enjoys hiking, river rafting, and scanning the night sky for the Northern Lights and shooting stars.

She boasts an exceptionally dry sense of humor that she attributes to her Jewish father. Little known secret: He was recently inducted into the Surfer's Hall of Fame, and her mom earned her captain's license for 60-ton ships. They're pretty amazing. You'd like them.

Married to Leif for almost a decade, Margaret's known for losing things like her sunglasses on her head, keys in her hand, or her phone for the 12th time in the same day. Luckily, Hershey hasn't been left anywhere... yet.

For being a writer, friends say she has a surprisingly narrow vocabulary and uses a lot of the same phrases including, "I'm game", "Whahhooo!" and "Oooh! Let's do it."

Always up for an adventure, Margaret is known to drive 50 miles to chase down a food truck and snag Groupons for skydiving on a whim. Some describe her as a bat out of hell behind the wheel. Steer clear. She prefers watching comedies and laughing until her tummy aches over doing sit ups. And if you touch her belly button she gets nauseous. So don't do it.

God shows himself in myriad ways; beauty, serendipity, shock & awe, conversation... even in the contrast between His own holiness and our tendency toward sin. But are we awake? Do we notice? Should we?

Through plumbing the depths of experiences from her own life, Margaret Feinberg invites us to reflect on mis-shapenness in our own lives. Are we harboring bitterness, too? How is our prayer life, really?

In a day when many Christian writers care mainly for their ideas, Margaret Feinberg obviously cares for her craft, which I find incredibly refreshing. I especially loved the way book elicited an easy-flowing attitude of prayer and reflection, like freely wandering the garden with God (rather than feeling like a note-taking student). The very first evening I found myself differently responding to memories and observations, captured by the wonder that would normally pass me by.

I especially love the way Margaret sets life contemplations on a firm respect for who God has revealed himself to be in the Scriptures and in creation. She experiences life just as we (her readers) do, shares deeply from her humanity, and shepherds us toward the Father as she struggles to hold tight to Him herself. Martin Luther once said that "We are all mere beggars showing other beggars where to find bread." For me, Margaret Feinberg's writing exemplifies the spirit of humility and the spirit of showing inherent in this quote.

More specifics about the book itself...

While I both enjoyed and was moved by Wonderstruck, I might have had my expectations a little out of place regarding how awed I would feel in the reading of it. Other than the initial chapters, rather than leaving me feeling awed, it left me ready to be awed.

I finished the Wonderstruck Bible study with the Womens Bible Cafe and completely enjoyed the study! I learned about Divine expectation, God's presence, rest, prayer, friendship and forgiveness. Each week was a new discovery. I especially liked the personal stories shared by Margaret, as I also read the book version (black cover) alongside my Bible study workbook (white cover). Thank you for the inspiring lessons and spiritual journey! I look forward to reading more of her books and Bible studies.

For those deciding which book to purchase, the Bible study (white cover) has five daily lessons, lasting about 20-30 minutes each day. You'll dig into scripture verses and apply the Wonderstruck lessons to the theme of the week. The book version (black cover) is a testimony of discovery from Margaret's personal experiences. Both books work well together and enhanced my spiritual journey. The stories are imprinted in my mind...I think my favorite is the old table and the lesson of hospitality!

Once again, Margaret Feinberg has written a book that reaches beyond the eyes and mind and touches the heart. Her stories are so real and such treasures! Who would tell about laying down in the grass while on a hike to take a look at the heavens? (Sounds a little goofy, you know!)

Once again, I feel challenged to look beyond the commonplace, to look past my usual and actually SEE the wonder of God. He is, after all, Emmanuel, God With Us. He is the Creator. Looking at the oceans, the stars, the mountains, the valleys, the flowers, the trees, one can't help but realize that the One who thought up all this is pretty wonderful.

Having read the words of Wonderstruck, I am doing a little more looking past the usual and seeing the Wonder of God. That, for me, makes a book an excellent read. It has moved me from where I was when I started it closer to where I want to be.

Margaret's writing awakened me afresh to the wonder of God. I will admit that I often spend a lot of time studying about and serving God, all the while missing the wonder of God. Margaret reawakened that wonder inside of me. I'm amazed a book could do that. Her writing style is whimsical and tangible. She is transparent and yet well researched. In short, she is perfectly equipped to help you encounter the one, true God, for the first time or the first time in a long time. Don't pass up this book, especially at the amazing price.

If you're anything like me, you were interested in this book because you thought Wonderstruck might be about being captivated by the beauty in God's creation, but I can tell you now, it goes so much further than that! Margaret encourages the reader to look for God in the ordinary and be touched by his presence, so that when it happens, it will leave you wonderstruck. This book is written like you're having coffee with the author and doing Bible study at the same time--a great talent. And lastly, a part of this book unlike any other I've ever read before is that Margaret has a "soundtrack" and lists songs for each chapter of the book to connect with the reader! I would recommend this book to anyone, any day.

Have you ever went through a red light and could not remember if you looked to see if it was green. That creates a scary moment. Most likely you looked but it has become so common place that your mind does not even log it in anymore. That is what has happened in so many of our live in relation to God and His nearness. This is a must read but it is more. It is a must put in practice book. I was able to read a pre-release copy and now I have ordered 4 more for friends and family.
