Editorial Reviews

Review

Wong’s Essentials of Pediatric Nursing continues to be a core text book that every children’s nursing student should have at their finger tips to compliment lecture notes and to assist them to integrate theory and practice. Each chapter has ‘nursing alerts’ and critical thinking exercises... It holds relevance for all children’s nurses and the usefulness of Wong’s Essentials of Pediatric Nursing continues long after completion of a programme in children’s nursing as a reference guide." I am in my last semester of nursing school, and this book has been by-far the least helpful, most poorly written, error filled, contradictory piece of kindling I have laid eyes upon.

There are omissions of crucial information. There are contradictory statements, often within the same paragraph. Most recently the book explained that ammonia should be used to kill parasites. It mentioned that Lysol is one product containing ammonia. Lysol does not contain ammonia. Just one example of hundreds in this book.

Probably most importantly, this book uses advanced medical terminology without explaining or elaborating on it, making the chapters unreadable without constant clarification - and I have very high grades, so I doubt it's me. The entire class has complained. Most infuriatingly, the book often defines very simple terms unnecessarily, only to use a complex key term in the next sentence without any definition or hint. I find myself reading wikipedia to clarify the book. The best is when one chapter will contain statements contradicting another. That's because each chapter is written by different people, and for the huge price of this book, they couldn't properly proof-read and standardize it. It feels like reading the rantings of a lunatic. Even the organization of the material is a massive jumble in many of the chapters. This book is totally lacking polish.

This book was required for my PEDs class. It is very detailed, specific, and has lots of writing, charts, etc. If you're familiar with nursing books, you will recognize 'Lippincott's' writing style and understand what I mean. There is a lot of information in this book, but I still had to do some additional research & resources to clarify some things and get better visuals. I PASSED the class, but I don't think it was because of this book, necessarily. The book on its own is an excellent book, but, PEDs is a challenging nursing concept and you just have to stay on track.

I'm not happy with this book at all. Although it is very detailed, it's almost detailed to a fault. They introduce acronyms without even specifying what they stand for or what they mean! Although the information is very dense, it has an underlying expectation of extremely well-versed medical jargon and background knowledge.

I find myself looking up dozens of terms each chapter. The book does have some great collections of clinical signs and symptoms, which I do appreciate. However, each page is so poorly thought out and doesn't flow in a way that makes it easily comprehensible. Hate it, and I want to burn it..if only I didn't rent it, and if only I didn't need it for my class.

Wong has been the leader in pediatric nursing education for over 20 years. When it became time for me to update my education on pediatrics; I would only chose this source.

I was told this book was in very good condition and I am now finding as I go through that there are pages that have extreme water damage that you can't even read what is said on the page because the words are so faded. I am extremely disappointed.

This is an insightful and good text to prepare you for the realities that you will face on the pediatric wards during clinical training. While the book does not have any NCLEX practice questions, this seems to be the only deficit that I noted.
