Editorial Reviews

2013 album from the British Folk-Rock legend. Linda Thompson returns with the outstanding release, Won't Be Long Now. Comprised of a mix of traditional and original songs -- including songs co-written by Linda with Ron Sexsmith, John Doyle and her son Teddy Thompson -- Won't Be Long Now follows Fashionably Late (2002) and Versatile Heart (2007) showing that her voice endures as a devastatingly beautiful instrument.

Linda Thompson hasn't released many solo albums, so when she does, it's a major event for me. Her voice is so distinctive and powerful, so perfectly representative of the English folk song idiom, that I could probably be persuaded to buy a CD of her singing the phone book! "Won't Be Long Now" is only her third album of new music in recent years, following "Fashionably Late" in 2002 and "Versatile Heart" in 2007. (She achieved her greatest fame as Richard Thompson's partner on their folk-rock releases of the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the two masterpieces that bookended their career together, "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" in 1973 and "Shoot Out the Lights" in 1982, but she retired from music for over a decade beginning in the late 1980s.)

This recording is a collaboration with family and friends. Linda's ex-husband Richard plays guitar on the first track, "Love's For Babies and Fools," which she composed for Rufus Wainwright, whose late mother Kate McGarrigle was a close friend. Irish guitarist and co-songwriter John Doyle performs on "Never Put to Sea, Boys" as well as Teddy Thompson's "Father Son Ballad," while Amy Helm, daughter of the legendary Levon Helm, sings on the lovely "If I Were a Bluebird," for which Ron Sexsmith wrote the tune. All three of Linda's children, Kami, Muna, and Teddy, sing with her on "As Fast As My Feet," written by Anna McGarrigle, Kate's sister and Rufus' aunt.

Teddy duets with his mother on the traditional tune "Paddy's Lamentation" from the film "Gangs of New York." He either composes or plays on several other songs, including "Never The Bride," to which Jenni Muldaur, daughter of folk and blues greats Geoff and Maria Muldaur, contributes background vocals.

This is a terrific album from a great survivor and performer. It is full of melodic songs which are beautifully arranged and performed. They are a mixture of the new and the re-worked old, every one of which is a real pleasure to listen to.

Linda Thompson really puts her heart into her singing, and the effect here is of real sincerity and beauty. She collaborates with a lot of her family, including, I am delighted to say, Richard Thompson who plays beautifully on the opening track, reminding me in places of the wonderful Dimming Of The Day.

This genuinely is a bit of real class from a very, very fine singer in collaboration with some excellent musicians. Very warmly recommended.

In her written notes for "Won't Be Long Now" Linda Thompson writes that when Martin Scorsese heard that she was contributing a track to his Film "Gangs Of New York" he responded by saying that he thought she was dead. Well, her fans have known that she is very much alive ever since she reappeared back on the music scene (after a seventeen year hiatus) with the critically acclaimed recording "Fashionably Late" in 2002. The fact that she has struggled with a vocal condition known as dysphonia since 1985 made that comeback all the more special. It wouldn't be for another 5 years (2007) before Thompson released another full recording, 2007's "Versatile Heart." Now after another 6 years, comes "Won't Be Long Now," which this "critic" finds is probably her finest solo effort.

What has always set Linda Thompson apart from many other singers is her ability to convey emotion with her stark, blunt and mostly unadorned voice. There is no histrionic singing here- there doesn't have to be. With any song sung by Linda Thompson, one doesn't usually "get "the emotional power of her singing upfront. Listening to her is a kind of organic process that has to sink in. Often the impact of her delivery or interpretation of a song isn't fully realized until the piece has concluded. Then the full power of what's been heard sort of hits one up-side the head in a rather profound way. One is left with an understanding of what gravitas is. That's not to say that Thompson's singing is disengaging by any means, because quite the opposite is true. One always senses full engagement in a Linda Thompson performance. I don't think she's capable of singing something that she isn't fully involved with - emotionally or vocally.

I'm loving this CD. I came late to Richard and Linda Thompson, about 7 years ago, but became a fast fan and had to get everything they'd done. What a joy to hear the first track here, "Love's For Babies and Fools" with Linda's ever beautiful voice and Richard's acoustic guitar accompaniment. It puts me in mind of their cheerful classics "Withered and Died" or even "End of the Rainbow." The two performed a song at the Kate McGarrigle tribute a couple of years ago at which time people marveled at hearing them together again after so many years; now we have this song as another treasure. My other favorite track is "Father Son Ballad" written by son Teddy Thompson and with a gorgeous and gut-wrenching accompaniment by Dave Swarbrick on violin. The trad songs such as "If I Were a Bluebird" and "Never Put to Sea Boys" are just lovely. And Linda's own songwriting skills plus the writing and performing of friends and family really give the album its special feel. You gotta hear "As Fast My Feet" sung by siblings Teddy, Kami and Muna. Blood singing indeed.
