Book Description

0325006059 978-0325006055 February 11, 2004

Marilyn Reynolds has brought many disaffected, school-hostile, and wholly unmotivated students into the ranks of lifelong readers. In this concise, practical book, she shares techniques she has used and personal anecdotes that reveal much about reluctant readers and teachers who struggle daily to engage them. Among many other key topics, Reynolds discusses:

  • the importance of respect for students' attitudes, experiences, perceptions, and choices regarding reading
  • tips for motivating reluctant readers
  • classroom management issues
  • tudent/teacher/program accountability.
In addition to insightful analysis, Reynolds devotes a good portion of her book to practical, immediately usable resources, including answers to frequently asked questions, prompts for teaching, and a separate section of "Tricks of the Trade" with logs, forms, an extensive list of "hit" books, and much more.

Read Reynolds and offer your reluctant readers the gift of a reading habit.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Marilyn Reynolds' passion for helping reluctant readers develop a lifetime reading habit is told with a mixture of wit and wisdom. Her personal narrative, practical suggestions, strategies, and ideas will bolster any reading program, especially one that fosters individual choice. Don't miss any of the material in the Appendices, which include surveys, graphic organizers, and other strategies that combine to make this a must-read for teachers.”–David Doty, Literacy Coach/Literacy and Leadership Partner, Los Angeles Unified School District

“Marilyn Reynolds has tackled the subject of the secondary struggling and unmotivated reader in a way that few others have. She has assembled a toolbox of practical and effective strategies that can be used to assist teachers with the students that appear in all of our classrooms. Teachers in all subject areas will find these strategies useful.”–Sue Stickel, Former High School Teacher, Elk Grove USD, California

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a puff piece for the author, July 9, 2004

Most of the book is a description of the author's own life and praise for her own young adult books. The title is completely misleading.
There are a few pieces of good and useful information here, but they are buried beneath the rest of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For teachers and parents of reluctant readers, January 20, 2007

This review is from: I Won't Read and You Can't Make Me: Reaching Reluctant Teen Readers (Paperback)
Marilyn Reynolds writes a great book for those who teach or plan to teach kids who have a history of poor reading habits. She courageously defends student reading of any and all books in the classroom for reading's sake. She has kids reading because they can relate to the content. She isn't squeamish about controversial language and content, and she carefully selects books that will engage kids in the reading process. Censorship is addressed as a deterent in drawing in the reluctant reader. This book is easy to read, full of great stories and advice, and is hard to put down. It is a great asset for any teacher's or parent's library to encourage kids to read.

I really enjoyed reading this, especially after one of our schools Sustained Silent Reading Sessions. It is part of our school improvement plan. I would really love to have a workshop with this wonderful teacher.
