4.0 out of 5 stars Wood Finishing Basics, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Wood Finishing Basics on DVD (DVD)
A very informative DVD that's well worth the money. All terminology is explained well and you are left with total confidence to order from your abrasive specialist and know exactly what you and they are talking about. Straight forward finishing tips what work. The only criticism it that the picture quality simply acceptable and the sound quality is a little poor in places. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Finishing Overview With Enough Info To Start Now, January 5, 2010
By

This review is from: Wood Finishing Basics on DVD (DVD)
First, realize that the name of this video is "Wood Finishing BASICS". If you are looking for a video to go indepth into specific types of finishes, this may not be the video for you.

What you will learn: Basic knowledge about repairing dents and gouges, using the right wood fillers and mixing them, proper sanding technique, a rubbed wax finish, a rubbed urethane finish, a rubbed shellac finish, a brushed urethane finish, and spray finishes (including setting up a large but inexpensive spray booth, and a small one). You will also learn many little tips/tricks, and also clean-up procedures for brushes, spray guns, etc.

PROS: What I liked most about this video is that he not only explains what to do, but why to do it. This is very consistent throughout the video. He tells you why to sand a certain way by explaining what will happen if you don't. He tells you why to use a specific brush for urethane and what will happen if you don't. He says why he prefers using gloss urethane to satin, explains why, and further explains how to easily turn the gloss finish into a satin finish.

The video quality, angles, and editing is clear and good. I was never left feeling like I couldn't see something, or that I wished they would have shown what he was talking about.

I also liked the segments on cleanup. He showed a urethane brush that was 8 years old but was still in very good condition. The video explained how it is kept that way during a cleanup segment.

He also covers many "what ifs" and how to correct them.

He begins the spray section by talking about spray guns and equipment, how the different guns work, why some are better for certain procedures, which ones are most versatile, which are most portable, etc, etc, etc.

Finally, he leaves you with enough information to have the confidence to go into the shop right after watching the video.

CONS: The audio quality is not the greatest, and it varies a little bit throughout the video. But I honestly had no problem hearing what he was saying at any time. Besides, I'd say the majority of the audio was fine.

He does repeat sanding on 2 or 3 occassions. It appeared that this DVD was 3 or 4 separate videos combined and they didn't think to edit out the repeated sections. However, sanding is probably the most important step in getting a great finish. Also, the 1st segment on sanding is very thorough and informative while the couple times he repeats sanding it is much more brief. It's really not that big of a deal.

CONCLUSION: He really does jam a lot of information into ~60 minutes of video... even with the repeated sanding segments. I was really worried that there would be superfluous information, non-descriptive instructions, and a lot of fluff (as the case seems to be with most instructional videos). But I really feel like I got my money's worth, and then some.
