Wood Folding Chess Set with Beveled Edges - 11 1/2" Walnut Board

This chess set is very well made for the price. The wood pieces are detailed enough for beginners to easily identify, and have felt bases. The board is a hinged case that stores the pieces when not in use. It's lightweight and portable; an excellent starter set for kids. It also includes a basic instruction sheet. I purchased it for a nine-year old grandson who just started playing and loves that it fits in his backpack. I'm very pleased with this purchase!

This is my first chess set, and I love it. I'm able to toss it in my backpack when I go to place to place, and everyone who has used it has commented on how nice it is.

I am an amateur chess player but recently I play chess every day. The set is nice, the price is good. However:
1. I expected that pieces will be stored in specially formed molds inside the chess board - they are not, if you want you can put them behind the rubber strings. It is just an aesthetic issue as if you play pieces are on the box, not inside the box. This is minor thing.
2. The color of the chess board is well selected as it is rather not dark brown for the 'black' fields on the chessboard. This does not make my eyes tired (even if I am only an amateur player). I can feel the difference since I have also the second chessboard (also wooden) but with much darker squares on the chessboard. After one game my eyes are just tired because of this dark color. I found this chessboard very good for my eyes.
3. The only thing that I might complain about is that pieces are very light and probably a little too small in regard to the square of the chessboard. And when you play often it is really more comfortable to play with pieces a little bit bigger and heavier. Bigger and heavier pieces make the game more stable. As I have mentioned I have another wooden chess set with a little bit bigger and heavier pieces. The height is the same but it is a base that makes the difference so when you make your 'checkmate' move your queen will not fell accidentally on the chessboard when you have a move (or for instance you just accidentally move your whole chessboard).
4. So now I play with this chessboard but with the bigger (in terms of base diameters) pieces from the other chess set.

So in conclusion:
Plus:
1. the chessboard is good (no complaints), good colors, not tiring eyes
2. cheap

Neutral:
1. pieces are nice (shapes and quality) but not outstanding, they are fine
2. general quality is fine

Minus:
1. light and too small pieces in terms of the base diameter what makes them not very stable so bigger diameters would be a plus

Recommendation:
1. If you want to play occasionally - buy them and you will not regret
2. If you want to play often - consider other pieces, the ones distributed with this chess set are ok. Heavier and with bigger base diameter would be much better.

This is a great chess set. It is simple, beautiful and durable. It does not however have coordinates, so we had to write numbers and letters on the board to be able to follow games from a book.

Bought this chess set as a Christmas present for my daughter. It is very high quality and convenient because it's so portable. Nice chess set and I would definitely recommend it. Great value for the price.

The set is nicely crafted overall, but the elastic that holds the pieces inside easily became detached and unraveled. A little glue might fix that, but I wish that it were more durable as delivered.

This particular chess game is nice because it folds closed and locks so you can put all the pieces in it. Also, the pieces are the traditional black and ivory colored pieces.

This is a good looking and lovely chess set to have. It is wonderful for travel and great for relaxation.

I was about to order this when I saw that Amazon was going to charge me $23.60 just for the shipping, effectively doubling the price. Somehow I don't think this product is that heavy! I am baffled by Amazon's shipping charges. I can buy a heavy box of diapers and the shipping is free, but if I want to buy some blocks for my toddler or a small chess set, the shipping charge is insane!
