Product Description

The WoodGas Fireplace from Spenton LLC employs the same air driven technology used in the WoodGas campstoves to provide a clean burning fire in a patio fireplace package. Like the campstoves, it runs on electricity to power a fan which gasifies the wood and then burns it. The fireplace is tuned to provide a taller flame for patio use. The fireplace includes a lid to protect the fireplace from rain, and an AC adapter for power.

The fan has an adjustable setting so that the intensity of the fire can be adjusted as desired.

Operating Characteristics:
Heat Output 50,000 BTU/hour 25,000 BTU/hour
Fuel Consumption 6.0lbs/hour 3.0lbs/hour
Power Usage 240mA at 12V 220mA at 12V

Dimensions:
Total Height 11.5" (29.2cm)
Total Diameter 14" (13cm)
Fire Pot Height 8.5" (21.0cm)
Fire Pot Diameter 10" (25cm)
Total Weight 15 lb oz (7 kg)
Power Charger 120V, 50-60Hz Input, 12V AC Output

Dual Stage Combustion, How it Works:

WoodGas burning systems effectively burn the fuel twice. In the first stage, combustion air is driven into the fuel to create some smoke (or wood-gas). In the second stage, more combustion air is driven into the chamber to burn the gas from the first stage. The electric fan provides the combustion air in just the right amounts to produce the gas and burn it completely.

Benefits:
High Efficiency - very little wood produces lots of heat.
Low Smoke - " Campfire Smell " almost completely eliminated.
Hot flame - high temperature heat.

Due to the weight of this product. It will be shipped direct to you from the supplier in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

backyard biochar maker January 24, 2011

I am using this unit to make biochar and it is working really well for that.

I am using wood pellets, with a No. 10 can for an inner retort chamber. Google "Folke Gunther simple biochar retort" to see how this works in principle. What I really appreciate about this configuration is that I get significant "bonus" char yield from the wood pellets _outside_ the retort.

I haven't tried other fuels yet, but expect that wood chips would work well also for making biochar.

This unit runs on AC. I understand that it will run fine on 12V DC. You can buy a cable that has a connector for the Fireplace on one end and a pair of bare wires on the other. That way you can connect to the 12V battery of your choice such as a deep cycle battery system or a car battery.

This works great ! November 20, 2010

I bought this to fire a small boiler for a model steam engine. It's terrific. I can get a good 40 to 50 pounds of steam. I'm sure that it would also accommodate a larger boiler. Mine is a PM Research horizontal boiler. It burns clean and hot and it is a great alternative to coal.

Fantastic April 12, 2012

If you want a great, safe, convenient and pleasurable fireside experience, this is it. It can be placed on many surfaces, but it should be flat and somewhat smooth for best performance. The bottom does not get real hot as long as the fan is running.

Briefly,
I already own the smaller (compared to this gem) XL camp stove. Made is USA, and the quality is acceptible . This unit puts on a real show and throws a lot of BTU's. Best part is that it breaks down any flammible cellulose substance into approx. 20% Hydrogen, 22% Carbon Monoxide (the rest are inert) gases that burn CLEAN. You will notice virtually no smoke once the "gas engine" is engaged (unless there is a lot of wind, which you can easily mitigate).

Suggestions:
- Wood pellets (for wood pellet heaters) are the ultimate fuel for this. Buy only PREMIUM quality pellets (such as Lignetics, etc.) that have 1% ash or lower content. Buyer beware, there are non preimium fuels out there. Why? because there are a lot of gas dynamics going on with this machine and you want it to operate clean. If you are inclined, the "slag" that results in burning quality wood pellets become carbon "super nodules", which when planted in your garden will hold at least in excess of 40 times their mass in water, over and over. Of course you can gasify so much more, but clean it may not be (oils, etc.). If you want this to last a long time, premium wood pellets are your ticket.

- Shutdown. You have two choices to shut down. 1- Just let it run with the fan on until it gets to ambient temp. This will expose the fan blades/motor to ash. 2- When there is no more visible combustion of H2/CO, safely dump the "slag" into a bucket of water, then immediately connect the fan again for about 30-60 minutes until it reaches ambient temp. This way it will last a very long time. Once it is cold, give it blast with an air compressor (or reverse vacuum, etc.) inside and underneath before you store it. Then you are ready for the next fire. Easy.
