Review

I really enjoyed this sweet and delectable romance that just makes you sigh by the end.  --Addicted to Romance Book Blog

"Darby is known for beautifully textured stories, and these novellas are no exception. Kate and Bianca's journey is not simply one of romantic love, but of sisterly love as well." --Sarah MacLean, New York Times Bestselling Author

Although I love the story, I felt it too short.

When Lucian Dorlingsley first spies Bianca, he falls head over heels in love with her but quickly discovers that she’s not allowed suitors yet.

This was a fast read, at about 140 pages, but also because the writing style is very natural so the story and dialogue flow smoothly.

Woo'd In Haste is the first book of the Taming Series by Sabrina Darby and is a retelling of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. This is a longish novella about 150 pages and it read like a novella. Woo'd In Haste tells the story of Miss Bianca Mansfield and Lucien Dorlingsley, Viscount Asquith and how they "fell" in love.

This is the first book that I read by Sabrina Darby. Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy it as much. Maybe owing to the "live at first sight" trope. Now, don't get me wrong, I do love a good "love at first sight" story but this was not it. Luc's character just rubbed me the wrong way and I felt that he wasn't a man but a boy acting to get this girl. He felt too good, too nice to be someone that Bianca would fall in love with.

I did like how Bianca changed throughout the story. Initially, we meet her as meek and accepting in her current situation. While her older sister, Kate, is out in London on her second season, she is stuck in the country with her former governess, younger half-brother and a father that didn't have any power at all. This struck me as odd. I did not like that that father allowed Kate to dictate his decisions, especially when she said that Bianca had to hold off her season until SHE gets married first.

All in all it is an okay read but it was not for me. I have the next book Wed at Leisure which is Kate's story. I have a feeling that it is going to be better.

Title: Woo'd in Haste
Author: Sabrina Darby
Genre: Historical (Regency) Romance
Rating: 3 Stars
Summery: Bianca is the good non-demanding daughter to her older sister, Kate's spoiled tantrum having ways. Kate demands to be wed before Bianca has her first London season and Bianca is forced to wait. But she is becoming tried of always waiting. She finds herself having feelings for a most unsuitable man, her younger brothers new tutor!
Lucian Dorlingsley, Viscount Asquith, falls in love with her at first sight. Luc's friend tells him he'll never be aloud to court her until her older sister marries. When said friend suddenly comes up with and implements a plan to have him masquerade as a tutor, Luc finds himself going along with it. But how do you reveal the lie to the family you wish to marry into?

My opinion about this one is so-so. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. I've read better historical romances, but for the price ($0.99) it was worth the read. I just don't see myself reading this one or Kate's story ever again.

1) Woo'd in Haste
2) Wed at Leisure

This was a fast read, at about 140 pages, but also because the writing style is very natural so the story and dialogue flow smoothly. When I first read the sisters' names were Kate and Bianca, it seemed very unoriginal to borrow names from Shakespeare. But about 20% into the book I decided the author's naming scheme was clever because the reader immediately understands the dynamic between the sisters without a lot of backstory.

Lucien is a fabulous hero. Just the right amount of sweet and shy mixed with manly determination to get what he wants - Bianca. He ends up pretending to be a tutor for Bianca's little brother so he has a chance to get to know her and woo her. And of course they fall in love. Bianca's character grows by leaps and bounds from biddable to tigress who will fight for what she wants. That tigress has been simmering underneath, so her incremental changes to be more assertive are still in character, and I was cheering when she gets a chance to stand up for herself near the end.

Overall a charming story with likable characters for light, fast reading. I recommend it and will read more from this author. I see Kate's story is coming out next and these are the only two books planned for "The Taming Series." What about Lord Reggie? He seems like a fun hero and would love to read about him in his own book.

Although I love the story, I felt it too short. Since I bought the second in the series, I look forward to some more closure with these two main characters.
The Heroine and Hero are very well written, with intelligent dialogue and banter. The Heroine is sweet and not sappy or silly. It is a bit light on drama or mystery that I normally enjoy with novels, but not bad.
I hope you enjoy this book and Author.

A lovely and elegant novella, the first in the new Taming series, by Sabrina Darby, one of my favorite historical romance authors.
The title and its companion volume, Wed at Leisure, take its inspiration from William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. While I am an English major, I do not know of all the possible allusions that Shakespeare aficionados may enjoy discovering.
Surprisingly, unlike Darby’s other works, there is no full sex scene, but several very sensual ones in her trademark spare style that creates intense emotion. This is not a complaint in the least, merely an observation. Darby’s writing is so rich that I almost didn’t notice it was absent.
Bianca Mansfield is waiting. She’s also very restless and agitated. She loves the outdoors, books—indeed, this novella is generously sprinkled with many literary and popular culture references, a joy to any classic book lover—and her youngest brother, Thomas. She has no control whatsoever over her life but, then again, what woman in early nineteenth century England did?
I didn’t like Bianca’s sister, Kate, at all and I see she is the heroine of the second novella in this series. But I love to read how authors can create sympathetic characters out of less than ideal ones. Kate here reminds me of Elizabeth Elliot, Anne’s spoiled and shrewish sister from Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
Bianca’s father and stepmother refuse to let Bianca have her own London Season debut because a) her elder sister, Kate, did not make a match in her first Season and b) Kate herself decreed it; until Kate marries, they will not permit Bianca to be officially “out” in society.
