- The photos are amazing! There are tons of full page photos of food arranged into the shape of Catan--hexes and all! The food landscapes are just gorgeous. They look fun to assemble if I wanted to throw a Catan-themed dinner party (which I have done...multiple times...because Catan is just awesome like that!). The photos are also really fun to just "Ooh" and "Aah" over with fellow Catan lovers.
- The recipes all adhere to some aspect of the game rules. There are recipes for everything that can be built--for example, there are "road recipes" where there the two main ingredients represent wood and brick, or city recipes that have two grains and three ingredients that represent ore. In addition to the recipes themselves, there are exciting Catan things to help you to change up the recipe to fit your own preferences (1 victory point--add bacon!) or dietary needs (port--trade out dairy/meat/etc. for something else equally delicious).
- There are recipes for several common dietary restrictions (e.g. gluten free, vegan, paleo). If you have dietary restrictions of your own, there will be plenty of recipes in here for you! If you have a dinner party and need to accommodate your friends' dietary restrictions, there will be plenty of recipes that will work for (almost) everyone! Hooray for all-inclusive eating!
- The writing is fun and entertaining, plain and simple. This isn't a recipe book with just bare bone lists--each recipe gets its own little (and quite amusing) intro that describes how it relates to the game, along with jokes that will crack up any Catan fan.
Bottom line: This is a great cookbook for anyone who loves Catan, and/or anyone needs recipes for a wide range of diets. I was not disappointed and I don't think you will be either.
Oseland knows geek culture in and out; she also knows how to cook interesting, delicious-sounding food. I appreciate the full-blown make an entire board food AND the quick and easy recipes. The photos are amazing and inspiring. I believe this is one cookbook with recipes I can actually replicate. I laughed out loud at the sheer number of ways she found to translate the Settlers board into food.
Excuse me, I need to go plan a party based around this book. Enjoy!
Wood for Sheep is perfect for ANYONE (geek or not) who wants to accommodate a wide range of eating styles and food allergies. The recipes in this book are such an innovative way to go about a dinner party and there are many fantastic options for complete meals in here. Honestly, this would work great even at my house where each member of my family has such strong opinions about what they want to eat.
Chris Rachel-Osland is a smart, funny writer. (I have her Dining With The Doctor book, too.) You can tell she's a geek herself, not just someone trying to capitalize on geek culture. The care and detail put into her books makes them as savory to read as the dishes you can create from her recipes. I just have one request: A Minecraft Cookbook for Kids!!!
From a content standpoint, it's just what I was looking for. The writing's quirky and funny and the photos are impressive. So while I can't recommend the pricey print edition, I'd definitely recommend the more reasonably priced e-version.
With recipes that range from snack foods, brunch ideas, to a full Thanksgiving meal, this cookbook has you covered. You'll earn geek cred with your gaming friends who will instantly recognize the board shape, but even non-gamers will love the interesting and appealing displays.
This book is a total win.
