5.0 out of 5 stars Wood Spirits and Green Men: A Design Sourcebook for Woodcarvers and Other Artists
I'm not skilled at woodcarving, but I have to tell you...these patterns are so clear, so easy to follow, that they lend themselves to nearly any medium! Clay, lost wax casting models, needlework, woodburning decorations, painting inspirations, even stained glass, which is my business. Bravo, Lora Irish! Thank you for sharing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Gardner's Garden Men
The book illustrates in excruciating detail the steps necessary to carve the Greenman shown on the cover. I had hoped that it would have had, instead, patterns for more greenmen rather than so much detial on the one.

I wanted to carve some wood spirits for walking sticks. I had some 1.25 inch dowels to practice with. I checked this book out of the local library, and was able to carve a decent wood spirit on my first try. The "practice" wood spirits ended up looking good enough to finsish and keep for display, even though I had never carved anything before. So if you are a new carver, or even an experienced one, this book will give you plenty of patterns, illustrations, and descriptive text to make wood spirits. I will be buying a copy soon so that I can keep it on hand.

I wish I could give this book a 5 star rating. I have now purchased 6 wood carving books, and this one actually gives readers many adorable patterns in large sizes and the permission to reproduce them. It then takes the novice through the steps from drafting on paper, roughing out, and then finalizing and sanding. The high quality of the color plates and the size and detail of the patterns makes this a must have for carvers. The designs are those that will appeal to young and old. Loved the dwarf faces!

Awesome, three great carvers: Chris Pye, Shawn Cipa, and the queen of design Lora S. Irish get together to make this very informative book. Well worth twice the full price.

It is an excellant book with lots of detail on carving one face. Could use a more detailed description on the tools that are needed for the other faces in the book and more detail on carving some of the other faces. NOT for the beginer. I repeat. NOT for the beginer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great source for Patterns : Not Step-By-Step Carving Guide, January 25, 2012

This book is a wonderful collection of Wood Spirit and Green Man designs. If you're looking for a book on detailed instructions for carving the Spirit, try the wonderful "Relief Carving Wood Spirits" by Lora S. Irish.

Relief Carving Wood Spirits: A Step-By-Step Guide for Releasing Faces in Wood (Woodcarving Illustrated Books)

But if you're familiar with the techniques for carving Spirits or you're just looking for ideas for different Spirits, this is a great book for you.

My husband just completed a built-in bookshelf unit with two arches and a lot of finishing molding, but something was missing. He started with an idea to add an antique shell molding in the middle of both units, but after considering different options, he ended up carving a modified and scaled down version of Autumn Glory Green Man. The bookshelves look wonderful and the Green Man is a much more masculine alternative for his man-cave! I'm now thinking about a Spirit or Green Man adornment for the other built-ins in the house .... and this book I'll use to find one!

Mostly a collection of patterns that you can draw yourself or free download from the web. For fourteen dollars? I don't think so. Only two poorly illustrated and poorly explained demonstrations. You won't learn much from this.
