This review is from: Wood and Stone (Paperback)
Having started, in 1975, with the Glastonbury Romance I decided to buy and hopefully read everything by and on JC Powys. GR still stands as one of the great works of the 20th c, though, regrettably, hardly anybody seems to know. Later on I came across the Village Press edition of Wood and Stone (at P1.95, those were the days), started reading it, and couldn't put it down until I had finished it up to and including its 722nd page. Its description of the English countryside makes you feel as if you are physically there, and the adventures of the queer pair of brothers, in which JCP himself can be recognized, keep you fascinated. It is not as rich and profound as GR, but the "masterpieces" of the day are dwarfed by it. |
