4.0 out of 5 stars Ok, not great, hole smoothness
I realized after I bought this that it's not WoodOwl's smoothest cutting auger. I used them to cut through 3/4 inch hard maple. There was some chipping/tearout around the holes. I know this auger is really meant for rougher work, hitting nails, etc, but maybe this review will help someone. Went through the maple like butter.

When our shop foreman informed me these bits were manufactured incorrectly I assumed that because we purchased them from Amazon, and since we have been using this brand of bits for several years, I would be able to get the problem resolved. That was a bad assumption!

The bits came missing their cutting spurs which is what allows them to cut into oak timbers cleanly with no "tear out". The defect wasn't noticed because they had been put into inventory when they arrived in their protective cases. Five weeks later they were needed and the defect was discovered. I could not return them because Amazon's return window had closed so I "contacted" the company. (The only way to contact them by email is through their "info" email address. They have neglected to respond and we are stuck with five pounds of expensive junk.

Be advised that if you buy these bits (which work extremely well when they are machined correctly) inspect them thoroughly before you put them in your tool cabinet.

I stumbled onto these bits searching for replacements for my well-worn Irwin ship augers. I bought the 1/2" and 3/4" by 7 1/2" bits. Man, are they ever nice bits. Very heavy, beautifully machined, have a 7/16" shank to fit right into Milwaukee extensions for my right angle drill. I know I'll never snap these babies off. Holes come quickly and smoothly. What a pleasure it is to use great tools and bits. You can't go wrong. As I ruin other bits, I'll keep replacing all other brands with these.

Ok, now were talking. This thing plows through new doug fir 2x in less than 2 seconds with a dewalt xrp on gear 2. Goodbye slow paddle bits. I have not yet used it on 100 year old nail riddled floor joists, but I will update my review when I have. By the way, these do not have the little side cutters, so they don't leave the cleanest holes. The holes tend to be a little hairy. Not for finish work. Excellent for rough in. Made in Japan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bit ever!!, August 9, 2008
This review is from: WoodOwl 03709 Tri-Cut 3/4-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch Nail Chipper Auger Bit (Tools & Home Improvement)
As an electrician, I go through a lot of small-bore wood bits. I picked up a few of these in 5/8", 3/4" diameters and 7" and 18" lengths. They are, without a doubt, the best drill bits I've ever used. They truly eat nails without eating the bit, and they self feed great. The 7 inchers are great for cordless drills. Never blow up a spade bit on a nail again! My only gripe? The material houses don't stock them! I plan to order a lot more through Amazon.

There are also similar bits (non-nail eating) which are designed for clean spar-free holes. I haven't tried them, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy Wood Owl products again.

Goes through nails like they're not there. The only feedback you get is the shower of burning-hot metal chips that cascade out of the drill hole. Haven't had a bind yet, even drilling through century-old doug fir joists and rafters.
