5.0 out of 5 stars Very smooth holes, and eats nails for lunch!
I'm an electrician. I'll say this about all the WoodOwl nail chipper bits. They are w/o equal for the price. I've used several of them from 3/4 to 1 1/2. They make very smooth holes, and slice through nails easily. You can only tell you hit one from the snapping sound, and the shiny sheared-off metal in the hole when you're done.
Also, you can re-sharpen them...

When our shop foreman informed me these bits were manufactured incorrectly I assumed that because we purchased them from Amazon, and since we have been using this brand of bits for several years, I would be able to get the problem resolved. That was a bad assumption!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very smooth holes, and eats nails for lunch!, May 18, 2008

I'm an electrician. I'll say this about all the WoodOwl nail chipper bits. They are w/o equal for the price. I've used several of them from 3/4 to 1 1/2. They make very smooth holes, and slice through nails easily. You can only tell you hit one from the snapping sound, and the shiny sheared-off metal in the hole when you're done.
Also, you can re-sharpen them several times with just a flat file. Though when the self-feed screw tip starts to go, its takes more and more effort to drive it through the wood, the more it gets damaged.
I drilled an entire 2800sq ft house with (1) 3/4" nail chipper on a 12" 7/16 shank extension, in a high speed Hole Hawg. I went through 12 nails that i knew of. Through......i didnt start bouncing on a nail, have to reverse out and drill next to it......right through em. I only had to sharpen it once near the end, because it was slowing down a bit.
-------------------------------------------------------
I've got various sizes from 3/4" - 1 1 /2", 7 1/2" and 18" long. Even @ full price (the prices go up and down, so watch for reductions), price vs. performance against an Irw!n, and ive only got one thing to say.....

---Anyone wanna buy my Irw!ns?---

4.0 out of 5 stars handles wood with nails, October 25, 2010
This review is from: WoodOwl 03713 Tri-Cut 1-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch Nail Chipper Auger Bit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have had a lot of damaged wood augers over the years from hitting nails. This Woodowl auger has a high speed steel cutting head instead of carbon steel and it can cut through a nail with minimal damage. Good for soft woods but with hard woods it gets stuck and then the drill starts to turn in the opposite direction taking me with it. I get the best results by using a high speed on the drill which may be hard on the drill but not as hard on the operator (me).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great bits, June 20, 2009
This review is from: WoodOwl 03713 Tri-Cut 1-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch Nail Chipper Auger Bit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I build custom treehouses and just got a 1" x 18" auger bit. It is by far the best auger I have ever owned. The three cutting blades smoothly rip through wood and don't rip your arm off when the drill gets bogged down when sunk fully into the wood. Also, the bit is extremely light in weight, like weird light, no bit compares.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: WoodOwl 03713 Tri-Cut 1-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch Nail Chipper Auger Bit (Tools & Home Improvement)
When our shop foreman informed me these bits were manufactured incorrectly I assumed that because we purchased them from Amazon, and since we have been using this brand of bits for several years, I would be able to get the problem resolved. That was a bad assumption!

The bits came missing their cutting spurs which is what allows them to cut into oak timbers cleanly with no "tear out". The defect wasn't noticed because they had been put into inventory when they arrived in their protective cases. Five weeks later they were needed and the defect was discovered. I could not return them because Amazon's return window had closed so I "contacted" the company. (The only way to contact them by email is through their "info" email address. They have neglected to respond and we are stuck with five pounds of expensive junk.

Be advised that if you buy these bits (which work extremely well when they are machined correctly) inspect them thoroughly before you put them in your tool cabinet.
