Product Description

Usually only found in machine shops, the super flat face of the granite surface plate is ideal for leveling small plane beds, flattening waterstones and general sharpening duties. Simply soak a piece of wet/dry sandpaper in water and lay it down on the stone; the capillary action of the water adheres the paper to the stone, eliminating the need for spray adhesives or PSA sandpaper. When done, wipe clean with a paper towel. This A grade plate measures 9" x 12" x 2", weighs 26 lbs. and comes with a surface map. Plate does not have ledges.

The Granite Surface Plate is a great addition to my shop and would be to yours too. This bugger is heavy, find a good place and leave it there it is not exactly portable. The quality is good, and it has already made a difference in my sharpening technique being higher than the table you can actually get some good honing action going with minimal effort. I spent a few minutes with a small plane iron and flattened the back and put a polish on the bevel and only took it up to 600 grit to see how it was and for sure I got nice almost effortless curls. I can see that spending some time to re-flatten and sharpen all my blades will be worth the effort as I have been gravitating back to hand planing things rather than sanding for hours as there is just something so gratifying in the sound of a plane taking a nice pass not to mention the pleasure that the wispy wood curl accompanying the sound of a nice sharp blade.

This is one item that I just totally recommend, get yourself one.

I just recently inherited a handful of old woodworking planes. I was looking for something to help flatten out the base of the planes. I ran across this and thought, "Wow! What a great price, there is no way this can be that flat for that price." After reading the reviews and seeing that it comes with paperwork showing measurements taken, I decided to get it and find out for myself.

A few days later it is now sitting at my front door. They shipped it in a small wooden box! Perfect to store it in to protect it. It was only wrapped in cardboard inside the box but the combination of the thickness and over all size of granite, the box and cardboard wrapping is plenty to protect it in shipping. I was a bit disappointed with the testing though. They only took 9 points. One point in each corner (4 corners = 4 points), one point halfway between each corner point (4 more points giving a running total of 8), and one point right in the middle (total of 9 points). I am a perfectionist by nature and quite honestly I needed more information.

Fortunately I have a very unique job. All those big scientific satellite dishes you have seen all over the world and in movies like Contact, and James Bond. Yup we build those. Those dishes MUST have a perfect contour to work. I measure the surface to make sure they do work. I have access to a Laser Tracker that can measure within .0001 of an inch and the knowledge to work it. So off to work with stone in hand!!

Once at work I actually had trouble finding a good stable spot. When measuring anything with a tracker both the tracker and the part absolutely cannot move or you get a false reading. After fighting with it for about 15 mins I got it setup to where it wouldn't move at all.

Five stars 'cause like I said it's flat and it's heavy which is all it's supposed to be. I use it with wet/dry sandpaper to flatten my Naniwa Superstones and as a very stable base for sharpening. I definitely recommend it.

Really cost effective for a home shop. It's flat enough to be useful, and cheap enough to replace if it gets damaged.

I use this with some sandpaper to flatten my water stones or for forming an edge. It is very flat and comes with measurements showing just how flat it is. Heavy, durable, does the job.

When you are looking for a easy way to sharpen you plane irons and chisels and you need a very flat surface to work off of then look no further then this great Granite Surface Plate. I purchased this plate to tune up the new Hand Plane I received for Christmas and it worked great. I am able to wet the stone to hold down the various sand papers I use for sharpening and with the precision of this piece of granite I was able to flatten the sole of my hand plane and resharpen the plane iron with a micro bevel that provides e with paper thin shavings of wood. I have also used this to sharpen my chisels and now i can shave the hairs off my arm with my chisels.

If you are in the market for a flat surface to do all your sharpening with then look no further than this beautiful Granite Surface Plate.

Heavy and flat. Perfect for sharpening plane iron and chisel backs which is my primary use along with quality wet/dry sandpaper in varying grits.

I love this slab. Perfectly flat. Used to make sure my knife blades are straight and not curved at all. Any thing you need a flat surface for and this does the job!
