It does not allow you to use the microphone from your smartphone headset.

This is just one more piece of the puzzle of incompatibility, but like I said, it does what is was designed to do.

I like the nifty capsule that it comes in and I use it for storage inside my computer bag.

If you want to travel with a single headset and use it for both your iPad and your laptop, this is the one. Now I can use one headset, the Bose QuietComfort 15 Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones NEWEST MODEL which includes a cable with remote for iPhone, on my laptop for IP phone as well!

Summary
The Woodees VOIPAD35 is a very nicely built "Y" adapter for channeling a four conductor 3.5mm mini audio plug from a cell phone head set to a PC or laptop that has a low level Mic input and a headphone output that are also 3.5mm mini audio. The item appears to be well built, is nice looking and works well for systems that fit the above description. It claims to work for Mac laptops, and this is just not true without adding a microphone pre-amplifier. Don't be deceived by the packaging claims - this unit will NOT replace the need for a USB or other powered headset for Mac users. It may have some utility for PC users, but you can find cheaper solutions on ebay.

Claims that are either overstated or plain wrong:
* The packaging claims that it adapts "Smartphone Headset to PC or Mac". This is only true for smartphones with 3.5mm (1/8") plugs. Some new phones come with a micro audio plug that is too small for the Woodees female plug. The requirement for a 3.5mm plug is buried in the text on the packaging. Fact is, there are a lot of folks who do not know the difference and this issue should be more clearly stated.
* The product does not adapt the microphone of a smartphone headset to a Macintosh. For some time, Macintosh laptops have not supported a non-powered microphone input. The input that many mistake for a mic input on the Mac is actually a "line" input that requires significantly more input signal level than a passive (non-powered) microphone can deliver. If any of you who use this product think you are getting it to work with the microphone, you are mistaken. What is happening is that sound is coming in via the built-in mic on the Mac, not the headset microphone. This is easy to verify by checking the sound settings in the "System Preferences" panel.

I bought these to work in conjunction with my Etymotic ER23-HF3-BLACK HF3 In-Ear Headsetwith 3-Button Remote Control for iPod, iPhone, iPad (Black) on my Windows PC (with Realtek audio on a Biostar motherboard). I'm not sure what the problem is, it could have something to do with the 3 button remote on the headset, but the mic has yet to ever catch my voice, no matter how much its boosted. It sends a loud clicking noise through the mic channel when i press any of the buttons, but this is the only time i can get any response out of it at all.To clarify, yes i was plugging it into the pink Mic-in port and not the Line-in. Very disappointed.

The biggest problem I have with these Y adapters and other headsets with 2 pins is that it is difficult to find out which is headphone and which is microphone. Quite a few manufacturers use a couple of strategies - color or raised/embossed icon for headphone or mic on the side. This one is a faint marking that requires a good lighting; you can't make out in semi-dark or at nights.

Woodees should have colored them separately, or added different raised bands on the pins or even embossed/raised icons on the side; it is a big oversight on their part. And that's the only reason I am giving a 3 start for this instead of a 5.

On the positive side, it is very well made (will probably last for another 2 notebook cycles for me), and good quality audio/signals.

First off, at a most basic level, this adapter works for me. But it's only working on my Windows machines, not on my iMacs. It's frustrating but the iMacs could be to blame. iMacs work fine with TRRS (4-contact) headsets as is, so there's really no need for this adapter.

The bigger concern is how incredibly thin the wires are. While this is the most 'professional' looking headset to mic/phones splitter I could find (no garish, lego-y pink/green connectors), its wires are so thin I'm afraid to use this with any sort of portable device where the wires could have wear and tear.

The connectors are quite nice and it works on my Windows machines (mostly laptops), but it doesn't work on my iMacs and I fear for the longevity of this device on portables due to the incredibly thin wires. I'll be looking to purchase a different splitter, even if it means putting up with pink/green connectors.

More known for their line of wood-bodied earphones, Woodees released the Voip Y adapter. First off, unlike their signature earphones there is absolutely no wood in this product. Its also the only accessory besides the usual lineup of ear buds in their inventory.

Out of the package, this 3.5mm audio plug has average cable flexibility and good tight fittings. The product's photographs on both the packaging and websites is misleading. The markings are almost unreadable. The manufacturer loses points for the white on silver lightly etched microphone and earphone labeling. Sight impaired buyers may wish to find another alternative.

Now for the test. I connected the Y adapter to both my laptop and the office desktop pc using a Plantronics head/mic set. Connection to both was a nice tight fit without any issues. I had no problem removing the adapter either. My conversations via Google Voice were consistently crisp and without any distortion.

After a few weeks use, I've come to like the Woodees Voip Adapter. With the exception of the labeling, its a good no frills, no thrills working tool. For me it covers the basics.
