5.0 out of 5 stars This one will carry you away to the Islands.
This CD has been in my personal top 10 since I purchased it 3 years ago. I put it on for outdoor barbeques, loung'n by the pool, or just when I want to get away from it all mentally. It literally puts me on a warm Maui beach at sunset. Keola's velvet voice, outstanding lyrics, and slack key guitar are tops. I have purchased other Beamer CD's, but in my opinion this...

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing album by a great musician
An embarassingly bad crossover album by slack key guitar master Keola Beamer. A few of the songs on here have the typical elegance of his best acoustic work, but others, full of '80s-ish drums and Jimmy Buffett-style island music crooning, are pretty dismal. I regret the time I spent listening to these songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Relaxer, July 14, 1999

Keola Beamer's music on Wooden Boat is better than any New Age music available. There is enough variety in the selections to give the listener a change of mood without ever jolting you from the main atmosphere and sense of being, literally, outdoors and rocking in a wooden boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars magical original album, May 20, 1999

This album is an all-time favorite. Beamer's vocals are magical, as is his slack key guitar technique. It's appeal is not just for those who love Hawaiian music; its cross-cultural and cross-generational. My adult son likes it and it's my two-year old's favorite album. What other album can you think of which has such appeal. We keep extra copies of the CD for gifts to special friends. The response is terrific. They end up buying copies for their friends and families. This is definitely a "can't miss" album. Aloha.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent, relaxing cd., November 4, 1998

I first heard this cd it was on public radio in kansas. After buying the cassette version, I wore it out because I played it so much. It's hard to pick a favorite tune from it since I enjoy them all.

This album combines tasty slat key guitar with some beautiful and moving vocal arrangements in a style that is both contemporary and timeless. Close your eyes and sail in Hawaii as it is meant to be experienced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Island-flavored vocals and guitar, finest kind..., October 30, 2002
This review is from: Wooden Boat (Audio CD)
If you like your Hawaiian contemporary music vocal instead of instrumental, "Wooden Boat" is a good choice. Mr.Beamer, as a singer, may not be Sinatra, but he is perfectly competent to deliver his kind of material pleasantly. This album is mostly vocals, mostly in English, mostly mellow songs, but it still contains plenty of superb slack key guitar playing. My personal preference is for his all-instrumental "Tales From the Dream Guitar" release, but only by about half-a-star. The true fan of late 20th-century island music would want to own both of these discs. There is just no real fault to be found with either one.

I am not familiar with Keola Beamer's catalog, so I approached this recording from a different perspective than his regular fans would. I bought this recording several years ago when I was expanding my guitar collection, listened to it a few times, then put it away. I retrieved it from my collection a couple of weeks ago, pulled it into iTunes so I could listen on my iPod, and then simply enjoyed it.

This is pleasant music, made for stress reduction or for any other time you want good music that does impose itself on you and what you're doing.

The instrumentation is first-class, Beamer's vocals are excellent, the material is good, and the recording quality is very good as well. If you haven't explored slack-key guitar, this may not be the best introduction, but it's certainly not a bad introduction. I recommend it.

My sister gave this CD to us as a baby shower gift, because it's one of my nephew's favorites. My son has gone to sleep listening to it every night for almost 11 months, and believe it or not, I'm not sick of it yet! I highly recommend this CD to parents of little ones, and to all who want some relaxing island music.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD Wooden Boat by Keola Beamer, September 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wooden Boat (Audio CD)
I found a AOL Hawaiian station on the internet. They played Hawaiian music that I have not heard before. The instrumental "Dancers in the land of Po" was very haunting and mysterious to listen to. It was actually recorded in 1994.
I founnd it for sale on Amazon. I love this CD! IT song has a different sound to it meaning when something is labled "Hawaiian" it usually will be traditional sounding music but this is different. It sounds kind of tropical to smooth and easy to Hawaiian sounding music. Very upbeat to soft and sensual. Fantastic CD that I listen to over and over when I need to kick back relax orn to just listening to while I Drive.

I can't even remember when we first bought this album. It's been a favorite for a long time. I wish his other albums had this same haunting mood. This is the most original, least commercial-sounding island album I've found. Well worth the price.
