4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but the natural wood one is better
The cord-wrapped handle is a great idea, offering more of a real sword-like look as well as a firmer grip. My hands tend to get sweaty and slip around a bit with long practice, particularly with the sealed lacquered finish on most bokken. This wrap really helps (though it needed a touch of glue to get it to stay in place). The two-piece guard design is a nice enhancement...

This one looked pretty good, but I wasn't pleased with it. I had an earlier plain bokken made of oak which I liked a lot, and sadly gave to a friend. I thought this one would be similar but the wood was extremely fragile, mine cracked and chipped just doing some light sparring against padded swords. The two-piece guard design is a nice enhancement too. Though you really don't need the guard at all for many applications it is nice looking and appears stronger than the original.

It's still a fairly cheap piece of wood, compared to an ironwood version, but at this price (it was $9.99 when I bought it) you really can't go wrong. A nice enhancement over the basic bokken. I do, however, prefer the natural wood version to this one as it looks pretty bad once you start using it and the color scrapes off. Nevertheless, if you want an inexpensive practice sword this one is recommended...

Bought this sword to practice and workout with. Is a great find for the workout or just collecting enthusist of Japanese-inspired equipment. The sword is nicely made and handles well. It comes nearly ready to use right out the box and looks good. The only drawback is the fact that the guard for the sword is not attached at requires some ingenity to attach properily and to stay attached.

Bokken is flimsy and looks as if it will break easy, and the laquor will scrape off. I have three other "real" bokken and this doesn't compare at all to those.

I would not recommend using this in any real practice. All show, no go.

Great big "made in China" sticker on the box too.

1.0 out of 5 stars A pretty piece of trash., December 20, 2010

I bought this a week or so ago for my little brother to give to him on X-mas and well, I'm actually pretty ashamed to even wrap it. It came looking like it was spray painted red, with missing paint, gashes, and bubbles all included. It looked like someone took a knife to it and just went mad. There were slices all up the wooden shaft and it had glue showing through the very poorly wrapped handle. It's just plain ugly and I'm so upset with the quality of this thing. It's not like I expected some handcrafted piece of treasure, I mean it's only eleven dollars but I've paid only a little more for ones that were ten times better than this. I guess I've learned my lesson.

I definitely wouldn't reccomend this product.

Especially as a gift unless you're looking for people to have the impression that your as cheap as the dirt outside your door.

I really liked it, however it came banged up in a flimsy package, so watch out for that. One thing you should know is that the seperator, from the wooden blade part and the handle, does move around when using it. This part is made out of rubber and slides around. It is not secured.

Well it was very good for practice but when i got it, it had
a crack at the end so their always is the chance of that happening
otherwise the grip and hand guard worked very well i just wish it
had been less sharp on the end because when i was practicing i cut
my friend and he has a big scar on his arm now.

4.0 out of 5 stars About what I expected, December 19, 2009

This review is from: 40" Kendo Wooden Bokken Practice Samurai Sword Katana (Misc.)
Well, to start, I should point out that I paid less than ten bucks for this, and had no intention of using it for any reason other than messing around. The sword was not red as the picture showed it to be, but I didn't really want a red one so it worked out. The sword came with a chip/crack in the tip, and that grew a bit when i dropped it on the cement outside. But again, I just wanted to play with it. The crack is only an aesthetic problem - its still sturdy and can take a decent beating. Its really pretty awesome - not too heavy, not really light. Like I said, its really sturdy and can take a beating. It looks awesome, most people don't notice the crack in the top anyway. Basically, if you're wondering whether or not to buy it, buy it. Yes you can get a better wooden sword, but for less than ten bucks this sword is more than worth it.

The real item given to me is completely different than the one depicted on the picture. I isn't all that shiny, and the shape is a little distorted, but now I'm just nit-picking. The paint is thick, and it dents very easily when practicing. The grip will slip off when handling it towards the bottom, which is how kendo sticks should be practiced as. The guard will also become a problem, and irritate the wrist after a while.
