Holy Crap! Wooden Indian was suggested to me by a friend, as a band that sounded "kind of like early Clutch." While this is true at times, The Handful are so much more than that. Make no mistake, this is a guitar rock album with a bad ass singer and tasty hammond b3 organ, and that's where the Clutch comparison comes in. But the Handful is influenced just as much by Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who, and Deep Purple, as they are by any post-grunge release. These guys just flat out go for it on every single track. the first track on the disc, "Walk Into the Light," comes off as Dio meets Molly Hatchet; the second track, "Wooden Indian," sounds like Danzig meets Deep Purple; "Ashes" is a modern power ballad with a southern rock twinge; and "Holy Roller," is blistering blues rock a la Mountain. At the end of the day, these guys combine so many different rock influences that they manage to create their own sound entirely. This is a pure rock record meant to be played at high-volume with the windows rolled all the way down. A very pleasant surprise from a band I had not heard of until now. KILLER
