4.0 out of 5 stars Shogi learner
I am very impressed with the game Shogi. My wife taught me to play. It is more dynamic than chess.

This game board and pieces are tough for me to rate because I don't have great experience with the game in general. For me, an instuction booklet for basic moves and names of the pieces would have been nice, but it is easy enough to find and print that info...

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic Shogi Set
A functional Shogi set that it pleasant to play with and easy to read but still reasonably priced. There is some variation in the characters and quality/color of the wood the pieces are made of, but only to a minor degree that does not distract from play or reduce enjoyment. The rules are fairly barebones but lay out the moves of each piece in a visually appealing way. I...

I am very impressed with the game Shogi. My wife taught me to play. It is more dynamic than chess.

This game board and pieces are tough for me to rate because I don't have great experience with the game in general. For me, an instuction booklet for basic moves and names of the pieces would have been nice, but it is easy enough to find and print that info on the internet.

My wife said the pieces are usually red on the flip side which helps avoid confusion while playing. The pieces in this set are not red on the flip side. She does like the wood pieces (plastic would have been bad). My wife gave this game the four stars, and I deferred to her on this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic traditional all-wooden Japanese chess-variant Shogi!, February 1, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars

This is brilliant, and a steal for anyone who has ever tried looking for Shogi in game stores in their hometown. You just can't find it! And if you do find it, it's terribly overpriced. Who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a board game? This is the traditional game of "Shogi", a Japanese variant of chess that includes promotable pieces, and pieces that, when taken from the opponent, can be "dropped" back into the playing field and used against him or her.

Though the rule-sheet leaves something to be desired, it does convey all the basic rules in an easily understandable format. All the pieces are perfectly shaped, carved out of wood, and even sized appropriately based on their rank and relative value. When promoted, the reverse side of promotable pieces bears a red character stating the piece's new rank. A few extra pawns are even included, in case you lose a piece.

All in all, a terrific game, and fun for the whole family!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chess with burning passion, January 15, 2008

Think of a chess game that allows you to capture your opponents pieces and place them on your side of the board, then you might imagine that which is shogi.

The Board itself is nice and durable and the pieces are made of a decent wood. But I do find myself wishing for a better way to hold of carry the board and pieces. This of coarse can be fixed by getting something yourself but it would be convenient to get one with the initial product.

All in all I recommend this product for the anyone willing to take the challenge and also willing to memorize some Japanese Kanjis (Japaneses symbols).

This is the first shogi set I have ever purchased. It looks good, and it is small which is nice for taking it to meet a friend somewhere. Some of the actual characters were faded right out of the box, which was a little disappointing, but they are still legible. Given the cheap price of this product, I am not really phased by the faded characters.

I was looking for a nice beginner shogi set that wasn't too expensive, but wasn't total junk. After looking for a while, I found this. It's almost perfect. Everything works great, and the only problem is that some of the kanji are faded on a couple pieces. It's not a major problem, but I went over it with an artist's pen I have just so that its easier to read and teach my friends. The pieces fit on the board nicely and they aren't difficult to move around. The instructions look like they could help someone who has a vague idea how to play (or at least knows how to play chess), but I'm not sure how they would work for someone who doesn't, but the there's great tutorials on youtube for anyone who needs more of an explanation. They entire set fits nicely back into its box, making it easy to move around. I'm definitely happy with the set and would quickly recommend it to anyone else who wants a nice shogi set that isn't expensive and works great.

Have fun!

I was a bit surprised at how small the board is, but find this to be more of an advantage than a drawback, especially combined with the fact that it folds down so it can be taken anywhere.

I just recently purchased this and, I am pleased with its quality. This is something that is very hard to find outside of Japan. For some reason I expected it to be a bit larger, but this is my fault for not looking at the dimension size. None the les I love the portability of it. The board doesn't lay perfectly flat, but this is an understandable sacrifice for making it even more compact. For the most part it looks like it is well made, Though since it is still new, it is hard to say.

overall I am happy with this, and look forward to teaching all my friends how to play. One miner detail is it doesn't have the best sound (when "slapping" the pieces).

I had no problems with this--- it showed up at my door quickly
and was worth the doh $(dollars) i spent on it --- hard to find in any games store here in Canada ---- the only criticism i could say is the board is just a touch too small for the pieces but that is minor. Now i just have to get my friends to learn and then play it with me.

One commenter stated that the tiles have no red side. This is a requirement for the game. Also, the pictures above show a red side to the tiles. So, is there a red side to this set of men?
