This set just isn't especially well made. The main complaints are that the set's sliding storage drawer can't seem to hold the pieces in any organized fashion, leaving you to try and cram them all in there before you close it up. Also, the pieces are all made from very cheap wood with many of the symbols on them printed in a somewhat blurry and rough manner. I'll admit, however that this didn't pose any actual problems in identifying the pieces. All in all, I'd say this set is very playable, but not good if you're trying to find a fancy looking set. However, I'll note that this set would be easy to travel with, since it's actually quite small in size (approximate measurement is about 1 1/5ths the size of your average textbook in surface size, and shorter than the height of a tennis shoe) and its sliding storage drawer seems to hold pretty well when bumped.

This small shogi set does everything needed and nothing more. Reading the other reviews I was worried, but the pieces fit in the drawer just fine, and the koma (the pieces) are very clear and comfortable to handle. This is not the equivalent of a cheap chess set one finds in the grocery store for $4.99, but rather the equivalent of a $15 - $30 nice but not fancy wooden standard chess set. It is rather small, but given the options available in USA, this is just fine without going under the threshold of totally cheep'o. I like it.

Pro's
-Board itself is quite well made from finished/smooth wood. -Decent Instructions -Quick Delivery Con's -Scrap wood pieces. Some discolored or slightly mishapen. Some have rough edges from not getting sanded down enough. In my order, some of the japanese writing on the pieces was faded, and one even came with a side completely blank! (It was a knight) -Board is very small. If you play with someone on a standard dining/kitchen table, you will both have to lean over quite a bit to reach the board. -Will not replace your order. If you get a defective piece, like I did, then Amazon won't replace it. -Drawer that pieces come in cannot house them effectively. It doesn't have enough room to organize the pieces. Conclusion -It may be hard to find a good reasonably priced set on the internet, but there are still better options then this. The board is nice but too small. The pieces are of poor quality. I would honestly go for a plastic/magnetic set over this. If you want a decent wooden set, look elsewhere. This one just isn't passable. 2/5
