Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Here is another appealing collection of homey recipes from the author of The Wooden Spoon Cookie Book (LJ 6/15/94) and other Wooden Spoon cookbooks. These are Moore's family recipes, among them Chocolate Birthday Cake, Relief Sale Sugar Cookies, and Amish Date Pudding. There are breads, rolls, and biscuits in addition to sweet baked goods, and Moore's engaging reminiscences give the recipes a context. For most baking collections.

From Booklist

The author of several previous Wooden Spoon books again draws on her Midwest-Mennonite roots for a new collection that calls up heavenly aromas of freshly baked pies, breads, cakes, and cookies. Moore, who teaches baking classes on America Online, obviously knows the value of conciseness, and her instructions are so clearly and simply stated that even baking novices can easily follow along. With a few exceptions (such as vinegar pie), the recipes are neither hard to come by nor unusual--cooks simply don't have trouble finding good recipes for oatmeal cookies, peach cobbler, or Dutch apple pie. It's Moore's insight into Mennonite culture and customs that raises this book above the norm, giving the whole a winning, distinctive, and homey charm. Stephanie Zvirin

Every recipe is wonderful. The recipes are simple and taste great. Everything I've tried comes out great. Many of the recipes have become favorite standards that we enjoy time and time again. Yum!

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory, April 12, 2010
This review is from: A Wooden Spoon Baking Memoir: Apple-Butter Muffins, Shoofly Pie and Other Amish - Mennonite Favorites (Hardcover)
I would give this book five stars, if only I "loved it," and did not simply "like" it. However, I will say that all of the recipes are "homey," and in my opinion also a little ordinary. That is to say that the recipes do not stand out on their own, but seem to be better when topped and eaten with ice cream, as in the case of the cakes and pies. However, one recipe I have tried that was very successful was the Chocolate Birthday Cake. Although it is simple, it is perfect, even when not made on a birthday! It tastes wonderful, and has a neat, equally nice appearance when iced. Another nice recipe from this book is the Relief Sale Sugar Cookies. I have made them on more than one occasion and am always pleased with the results, as is anyone who tries them!
