Review

"Woodie" is a nick name for wooden bodied automobiles that originated around the turn of the 20th century to carry passengers and their luggage from the train station to their hotel. Woodies are the original station wagons. Most woodies were produced before 1950. By the 1960's and early 70's, California surfers specifically were attracted to the cars because they could be had for cheap, could carry a good number of people and surfing gear and were relatively easy to fix up with some minor woodworking skills. The woodie became the vehicle of the surfer and was mentioned by name in several surf band songs. Today, woodies are highly collectible and in demand antique automobiles fetching over $100,000 when restored. Most woodies can be found along the west coast of the United States due to their prior history with surfers and the fact that the weather is more mild making it easier for these old wooden cars to survive the elements. There are several gatherings of woodie enthusiasts each year throughout the United States, but most of and the biggest gatherings, or "woodie meets" are held in California. This calendar presents unique images of woodie automobiles, as photographed by Bill Gerrard, captured at most of the events held in California over the past year.
