4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Azymuth, September 5, 2000
This review is from: Woodland Warriors (Audio CD)
A welcome recent release from a band that's been around for around 30 yrs. The first track is a laid back jazz-pop tune set above a background of jungle sounds and atmospherics. You could just imagine yourself slowly cruising the Amazon. The Quest is underpinned by a 70's disco drumbeat, but is a vehicle for several keyboard solos from Bertrami. The third track sets us back into a laid back mood but with more light and shade for interest. Track4 (so Sad) is blue-mood funky piece. The title track(penned by Ivan Conti) has got to be the outstanding track with some great drumming and percussion in changing rhythm times. The bassist Malheiros also thrives in this format. Festiva nativa typifies their music of the last two decades with splendid piano from Bertrami. Xingo is a typical Brazillian samba which fuzes some Jazz elements. The second last track is a funky dance track. And that brings us to the last track a delicious funky cover of the Headhunters's tune from the 70's.

Overall nothing to cerebral in this just a great fusion of Brazillian, Jazz, Funk and Pop.

Thoroughly recommended.

This album will be a collector's item. This album is Azymuth's 2'nd album for FAROUT. I must admit, very groovy, very into Brasilian folk rhythms. More bass and drum elements, one of the best tracks, laranjeiras, is a brilliant example how to make human bass 'n drum with a Jazz and Samba taste.

3.0 out of 5 stars Azymuth - Woodland Warrior, February 21, 2011
This review is from: Woodland Warriors (Audio CD)
Azymuth have been around since the 70s, but their music still remains fresh. Combining Brazilian jazz elements with a touch of modern electronics, Woodland Warrior is a journey right down the Amazon, replete with slap bass and crazy Hammond organ lines. Those who are looking for "future jazz" may be disappointed, because there's certainly more jazz than future (save the house kick drum on "The Quest?"), but those who prefer funky jazz will find themselves in good company.
